    Notes: An investigation of the influence of crystalline microstructure on fatigue crack propagation (FCP) in high-density polyethylene (HDPE) is reported. Various thermal histories were used to generate samples with the same crystallinity and supermolecular structure for three different molecular weight HDPEs. Estimation of tie chain densities were obtained from measurements of brittle fracture stress and predicted from the estimated chain dimensions of the polymers using the modified version of the approach originally taken by Huang and Brown. A significant decrease in FCP resistance and a clear transition to a more brittle fracture surface was observed with decreasing molecular weight. Detailed studies of damaged zones preceding the growing crack show a transition to a more highly branched crack structure for those samples associated with a higher FCP resistance. These results strongly suggest that the branched damaged zone structure improves the FCP resistance by enlarging and blunting the crack tip and, therefore, consuming more energy during the fatigue crack propagation. Additional efforts were made to prepare samples with the same crystallinity and tie chain density, but different supermolecular structure. However, in contrast to reports in the literature, no significant difference in FCP resistance was observed for specimens with different average spherulite sizes. This is probably because the propagating crack front is preceded by a significant zone of plastic deformation and is not expected to directly encounter the spherulites.

    Notes: Measurements of the complex permittivity were used to study miscibility and phase behavior in blends of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) with two random ethylene - vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers containing 45 and 70 wt % of vinyl acetate. The dielectric β relaxation of the pure polymers and blends was followed as a function of temperature and frequency for different blend compositions and thermal treatments. Blends of EVA 70/PVC were found to be miscible for compositions of about 25% EVA 70 and higher. Blends of lower EVA 70 content showed evidence of two-phase behavior. EVA 45/PVC blends were found to be miscible only at the composition extremes; at intermediate compositions these blends were two-phase, partially miscible. Both blend systems showed lower critical solution temperature behavior. Phase separation studies revealed that in the EVA 45/PVC blends, PVC was capable of diffusing into the higher Tg phase at temperatures below the Tg of the upper phase. In the blends, ion transport losses were significant above the loss peak temperatures, and in the two-phase systems, often obscured the upper temperature loss process. It was shown possible, however, to correct the loss curves for this transport contribution.

    Notes: Normalized dielectric loss curves for blends of PVC with an EVA copolymer containing 70% vinyl acetate showed significant broadening with increasing PVC content. In conjunction with phase separation studies it was concluded that increasing loss curve broadness correlated with increasing tendency toward phase separation. Calculation of correlation parameters for the blends revealed differences in intermolecular correlations with blend composition.

    Notes: The large direct current (d.c.) conductance observed at low frequencies and high temperatures in conjunction with a simple electrical circuit model was used to calculate specific conductivities in PVC and mixtures of PVC with a poly(ethylene-vinyl acetate) copolymer. Activation energies for d.c. conduction and dipole relaxation in PVC and the blends were found to be in reasonable correspondence. The effects of different electrode materials on the d.c. conductance as well as on electrode polarization are discussed.

    Notes: In this paper we focus on miscible blends of two engineering polymers: poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) and a polyarylate (PAr). The issue of transesterification in these blends will be addressed, followed by a discussion of the crystallization kinetics of PBT, poly(ethylene terephthalate) and several PBT/PAr blends. The ability to estimate polymer-polymer interaction parameters in blends from melting point depression will also be discussed. The amorphous phase behavior of the PBT/PAr blends has been explored primarily using dielectric spectroscopy. For blends in which PBT has crystallized, we observe two relaxations associated with Tg-like motion, and this behavior is interpreted in light of our recent work on order-disorder interphases in crystalline blends.

    Notes: The mechanical properties of compatible poly(ε-caprolactone)/poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) blends were studied for samples prepared from both the melt and solution. The mechanical response was observed to be primarily dependent upon the variation of the glass transition temperature with blend composition. For certain compositions, varying the sample preparation scheme resulted in specimens of different modulus. This behavior was associated with differences in the degree of crystallinity.

    Notes: Lead zirconate-titanate (PZT)/polymer composites have been prepared by in situ polymerization of styrene and methyl methacrylate around aligned, thin PZT rods. Hydrostatic piezoelectric coefficients (d̄h and ḡgh) measured by a dynamic technique yielded figures of merit (d̄hḡh) roughly four times that of homogeneous PZT for as-polymerized composites. When these composites were annealed at a temperature slightly below the glass transition temperature of the matrix polymer and repoled, d̄hḡh increased nearly twofold due primarily to a reduction of the composite dielectric constant. The piezoelectric response was found to be essentially independent of frequency from 30 to 160 Hz.

    Notes: The infrared spectra of polyethylene single crystals suspended in liquid are reported and compared to dried mats of the same material. In order to observe the polyethylene bands, liquids with partial windows in complementary regions of the spectra were chosen. Any remaining bands of the suspending media were removed by substraction of the spectrum of the pure liquid. The crystalline bands of suspended polyethylene are much sharper than those of the dried material, indicating a decrease in lateral crystalline order upon drying. Drying also results in a change in the type and distribution of conformations associated with amorphous and fold structures, as determined by the observed frequencies of the methylene wagging mode.
