Notes: We have examined the rheological properties of a Co-adsorbed γ-Fe2O3 magnetic suspension with polyurethane (PU) as a binder and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) or cyclohexanone (CH) as a solvent. A Haake RV20 viscometer was used to measure the suspension viscosity and the vane method was adopted to determine the fluid yield stress. A rheological model which can be viewed as a combination of the Casson model and the Bingham model is proposed to describe the suspension viscosity. The effects of temperature, particle content, and binder concentration are included in the model.

Notes: The effect of polymer additives on the performance of a two-roll coater has been examined experimentally. The coater consists of a rigid steel roll and a deformable roll with polyurethane surface. Newtonian coating solutions and solutions with polymer additives were used as test fluids. Both forward and reverse coating operations were studied. It was found that for the forward coating operation, the shear-thinning behavior of the polymer solutions can reduce the coating thickness, but the fluid elasticity can increase the coating thickness significantly and can also destabilize the coating flow. For the reverse coating operation, a small amount of polymer additives can effectively increase the wipe ratio.

Notes: A novel approach is proposed to adjust flow nonuniformities caused by production variations from an extrusion die. A mathematical model that is based on the lubrication approximation was developed, and the effect of four types of production variations was examined separately. To each production variation, a specially designed choker bar was constructed and inserted into the extrusion die to correct flow nonuniformities. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: We propose to apply two approaches to analyze the design and performance of extrusion dies that deliver wide and thin uniform sheets and films of fluids with yield stress. The first approach is based on the one-dimensional lubrication approximation and the second approach is the three-dimensional finite element simulation. The performance of a T-die and a coat-hanger die has been under investigation. The effects of two dimensionless groups, the Reynolds number Re and the Bingham number Bi, on lateral flow uniformity have been examined. Several design variations, such as opening the end of the manifold and inserting a choker bar into a die, have also been studied. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
