    Notizen: The neighbor-neighbor interactions in the small ribotrinucleotide ApApCp were investigated with the aid of optical rotatory dispersion measurements. This trinucleotide shows a Cotton effect between 220 and 325 mμ, in the region of its maximum ultraviolet absorption. The specific rotation of the trinucleotide is independent of concentration while the magnitude of the Cotton effect (levorotation) decreases markedly with increasing temperature. Such effects were not observed with the component nucleotides alone, in a simulated hydrolysis mixture, nor with the hydrolyzed trinucleotide. The Cotton effect is attributed to perturbation of the nucleotide base chromophores by neighbor-neighbor intramolecular interaction (stacking), without any hydrogen bonding being involved; this interaction decreases with increasing temperature because of increased internal rotational freedom about the single bonds of the backbone chain with an accompanying disruption of the neighbor-neighbor interaction between the bases. This explanation is supported by a statistical mechanical theory of neighbor-neighbor interactions in polynucleotides, involving the forces between the bases. Application of this technique to further studies of polynucleotides and polypeptides is discussed.

    Notizen: In the course of studying the properties of highly conjugated polymers, we found that long-range orbital delocalization conferred unexpected properties. The giant electronic orbitals made these materials electroactive yet very stable. A new mode of electronic polarizability, a giant nomadic polarization, resulted, making these organic polymers among the most polarizable materials ever observed. In addition, remanent magnetization, high conductivity, and unusual pressure sensitivity could be achieved. The giant-orbital concept opens new vistas of materials properties.

    Notizen: Studies were made of the apparent melt viscosity and chain rupture of polyisobutylene melts during high mechanical shear at various temperatures, and for varied times of shearing action. A biconical rheometer was constructed and used for this study. It was observed that the torque developed in such a rheometer by the action of shear on molten polymer shows peculiarities. The initial high torque, or the apparent melt viscosity which may be derived from it, drops rapidly to a pseudo steady state value in about one or two minutes. An interval of shear cessation permits considerable return of the system to the original high value of the apparent melt viscosity, especially if the cessation interval is long (e.g., 10 min. at 45°C.). During the pseudosteadystate period there is a small and continuous drop in the already reduced torque or the apparent melt viscosity. Study of the chain rupture rate, made by examination of dilute solution viscosities, and the viscosity-average molecular weights determined from them, showed the rate of chain degradation to decrease as the temperature during the shearing operation is raised. The chain rupture rate decreases steadily as shearing is continued, and increases with increase of shear rate at a given temperature and time of shear application. The behavior of the apparent melt viscosity, decreasing sharply to a pseudosteady-state value shortly after intense shear begins, is presently pictured as due to two mechanisms, one chemical, the other mechanical, acting simultaneously. One process is considered to be the rapid breakdown of the chainlike molecules to smaller fragments forming mainly free radicals or ion pairs at their ends. These reactive ends begin immediately to recombine at a rate which increases with the rise in their concentration until the pseudoequilibrium state is reached. The second process is considered to arise from both chain disentanglement and the preferential migration of holes in the liquid away from the center of gravity of the chains to form regions of low viscosity which may be termed fault lines or regions.

The intention is to correlate adhesion and initiation of corrosion to these relevant physical and chemical properties. Chemical formulas and structure of three vinyl-three epoxy- and one polyurethane-paint system are given in this article. Each paint has been formulated to meet appropriate military specifications. Subsequent articles will deal with dynamic mechanical properties, small angle x-ray scattering measurements of porosity, and transport properties.

    Notizen: ESCA, ISS, AES and scanning Auger microscopy have been used to examine a sputter-cleaned Pt3Sn alloy surface before and after exposure to oxygen at 10-6 Torr. It is found that the amount of oxygen adsorbed on a sputtered surface is a strong function of sample temperature with a maximum at about 200°C. The clean surface consists of regions of varying Pt-to-Sn concentration ratios. Regions near grain boundaries are tin rich, and the tin concentration decreases in moving away from a grain boundary until a platinum-rich region is reached. ESCA shows that an exposure to oxygen causes oxidation of the tin but no change in the Pt core-level features. ISS shows that segregation of tin to the surface occurs and that the surface Pt concentration decreases due to coverage by the tin.

    Notizen: The polymeric hydrogen form of phthalocyanine is found to be more conductive than the metallic derivatives, in contrast to the behavior of the monomers. In addition, the polymers were found to be much more conductive than the corresponding monomers with the resistivity of the polymers ranging from 7 ohm-cm to about 3 × 106 ohm-cm. The polymers were found to have moderately high dielectric constants ranging from 16 to 1300 at room temperature, depending upon the applied pressure. Based on the dependences of the conductivity and permittivity upon the electric field strength, the average molecular length of the conductive paths within the polymer molecule has been estimated to be 100-1000 Å. In view of these estimated lengths, together with the exponential dependence of the permittivity and conductivity upon the pressure and temperature, the dispersion of the dielectric constants in the range of 10-100 KHz, and the chemical architecture of these ribbonlike polymers, the electronic behavior of these polymers is concluded to be consonant with the model of essentially one-dimensional conduction within and along the chains by freed charges. Much as in a number of previously studied highly conjugated polymers, the present polyphthalocyanines are semiconducting and exhibit nomadic polarization, with dielectric constants ranging from 70 to 1300.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Es wird über eine sorgfältige Untersuchung berichtet, Verhältnisse von Molekularge-wichts-Durchschnittswerten als Maß für die Polydispersität von Polymeren mittels Dichtegradienten-Versuchen zu bestimmen. Die Ergebnisse können wie folgt zusammengefaßt werden: Das Verhältnis von Gewichtsmittel M̄w zum „σ“-Mittel 〈M〉5/2σ eignet sich besset zur Charakterisierung der Polydispersität als Verhältnisse mit anderen Durchschnittswerten. Die Annahme einer SCHULZ-Verteilung erlaubt es, aus diesem Verhältnis M̄w/M̄n zu berechnen. Eine statistische Analyse der Meßdaten von Dichtegradienten-Versuchen an fünf verschiedenen Polystyrolpräparaten zeigt, daß die Auftragung der Molekulargewichts-Durchschnittswerte für sich allein nicht günstig ist, um die Grenzwerte dieser Durchschnitte zu bestimmen. Jedoch ergibt die Auftragung der Verhältnisse vom niedrigen zum höheren Durchschnittswert des Molekulargewichtes gegen die Konzentration gute Geraden mit geringen Steigungen, sowie vernünftige Grenzwerte mit relativ niedrigen Fehlern. Dieses günstige Verhalten findet man sowohl für gute als auch für Theta-Lösungsmittel. Für Polymere mit unsymmetrischen Banden im Dichtegradienten kann man vernünftige Werte für die Polydispersität nicht auf einfache Weise erhalten.
    Notizen: A careful study on the possibility of determining molecular weight average ratios from density gradient experiments, is presented. The results can be summarized as follows: The ratio of the weight average M̄w to the “o” average 〈M〉5/2σ is more suitable for characterizing the polydispersity than those involving other averages. Assumption of a SCHULZ type distribution allows one to calculate M̄w/M̄n from this ratio. A statistical analysis of the data obtained on five different polystyrene samples by density gradient centrifugation reveals that it is not favorable to plot single molecular weight averages vs. concentration in order to get the limiting value of that average. However, plots of ratios from lower to higher molecular weight averages vs. concentration give good straight lines, have moderate slopes, and yield a reasonable limiting value with relatively low errors. This favorable behavior is found in both good solvents and theta solvents. For polymers which have skewed bands in a density gradient reasonable measures for sample polydispersity cannot be simply obtained.

    Notizen: Macromolecular solids of highly aromatized structure can exhibit giant polarization. Their structures must be capable of providing long-range electron orbital delocalization. Intermolecular conformality of the orbitals of these huge molecules can result in ready carrier formation. The ready transport of these electronic holes and electronic carriers as polarons able to range over long molecular domains will then produce the giant polarization characteristic of the nomadic polarization mechanism. Recent developments in the synthesis and characterization of such materials new make available a new and interesting class of very stable organic dielectrics having dielectric constants in excess of 100. A number of such materials are described.

    Notizen: 2,5-Dichlorothiophene, 2,5-dibromothiophene, and tetrabromothiophene have been polymerized with anhydrous sodium sulfide in N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) at 250°C to insoluble products which contain structural fragments derived from both the starting thiophene and the NMP. The copolymers absorb 0.5 to 1.0 times their weights of iodine to give materials with electrical conductivities of about 10-5 (ohm cm)-1 at 16 kbar and 10-7 (ohm cm)-1 at atmospheric pressure.
