Notes: Methods for making monodisperse polyester copolymers of predetermined length, com-position, and sequence are reported. Alternating oligomers of (L)-lactic-co-glycolic acid (La-co-Gl), isosteric with polypeptides, are prepared by solution methods of protecting, coupling, and deprotecting alcohol and acid groups. The carboxylic acid is protected by benzyl ester formation and released by hydrogenation. The hydroxyl group is protected as the methoxyethoxyethyl ether and deprotected with sodium iodide and trimethylsilyl chlo-ride. Coupling uses dicyclohexylcarbodiimide. End-capped alternating oligomers containing —(GILa)4— and —(GILa)8— show polymer properties. They are noncrystalline oils that exhibit discernable Tg. The conformation of —GILa— and —LaGl— diads in the polyesters is shown to be similar to isosteric peptide diads —GlyAla— and —AlaGly—. Exactly structured, monodisperse polyesters suggest a chemical parallel to proteins. Designed struc-tural templates combining sheet-form —(Gl)n— and helical —(La)n— segments are at-tractive synthesis targets. The solution preparations reported here can be applied, but it is suggested that biosynthetic methods for introducing single ester units into peptide chains be adapted to synthesize precisely fashioned polyesters. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The rotating sphere viscometer is found to be a superior method of measuring the viscosity at zero shear rate of moderately viscous non-Newtonian fluids. The effects of inertia and container walls are studied experimentally. The shear stress-shear rate relationship is found to be linear at the low shear rates studied; thus yielding the limiting viscosity. This measured value of the limiting viscosity can be used in empirical models that are applicable over a wide range.

Notes: Abrasive stripping voltammetry has been employed to describe a simple and rapid solid-state voltammetric procedure for the screening of pecticides. A particular case of chlorothion studied on cucumber and lettuce is discussed in this communication. The procedure described provides a semiquantitative assessment and obviates the need to bring the substrate into solution.

Description / Table of Contents: Image analysis as a modern technique of particle measurement. The determination of particle size distributions and morphological properties of disperse solids in the particle size range between a few ßm and several mm in a very short time using a single measuring technique is practicable only by the indirect method of image analysis. If an image analysis instrument is to compete with other modern methods of particle size analysis, e.g. light scattering and diffraction spectrum instruments, also with regard to the analysis time and the number of particles necessary for statistical reasons (〉105), then it must be fully automated. This article, which is to be regarded as an introduction to the field of image analysis, therefore describes the measuring principle and the construction of automatic image analysis systems. The most important elements are therefore examined with regard to their suitability for particle size analysis, paying attention to the specific requirements of the engineer as user. The paper closes by considering the important problem of sample preparation for image analysis, and preparation techniques for specific applications are described.
