Notizen: ESCA, ISS, AES and scanning Auger microscopy have been used to examine a sputter-cleaned Pt3Sn alloy surface before and after exposure to oxygen at 10-6 Torr. It is found that the amount of oxygen adsorbed on a sputtered surface is a strong function of sample temperature with a maximum at about 200°C. The clean surface consists of regions of varying Pt-to-Sn concentration ratios. Regions near grain boundaries are tin rich, and the tin concentration decreases in moving away from a grain boundary until a platinum-rich region is reached. ESCA shows that an exposure to oxygen causes oxidation of the tin but no change in the Pt core-level features. ISS shows that segregation of tin to the surface occurs and that the surface Pt concentration decreases due to coverage by the tin.

Notizen: ISS, AES and angle-resolved ESCA have been used to characterize the native oxide layer formed on the chemically polished and etched InP (111) surface. It is estimated that this oxide layer is about 30 Å thick and forms a sharp interface at the oxide/InP boundary. The oxide layer is nonhomogeneous. ISS shows that the outermost surface layer is In rich, and AES combined with the ISS results shows that the region just below the surface layer is P rich. The In is believed to be present in the oxide layer as InP and InPO3 in approximately equal concentrations. Only a small amount of In2O3 is detected. Carbon also comprises the oxide layer, and ESCA shows that it is present as graphite and/or hydrocarbons. The region below the oxide layer is P rich, but depth profiling using AES while sputtering suggests that the composition may approach that of InP with increasing depth.

Notizen: Nitrogen-ion implantation of conventional Cr and amorphous bright chromium-deposited (ABCD) films which were preannealed at various temperatures, has been carried out in order to determine the effect of implantation on the hardness of the Cr layers. The implantation was carried out using low ion beam fluxes in order to maintain a sample temperature below 250°C. Implantation leads to increased hardness, but the extent is most pronounced for conventional films which were not annealed and ABCD films which were annealed at or below 400°C for ½ h. The surface sensitivity of the hardness measurements was varied by altering the load used during the test. Data obtained in this manner show that the more surface-sensitive hardness is greater than the more bulk-sensitive hardness for both the implanted and non-implanted ABCD films and the implanted conventional Cr films. The compositions of the implanted films have been characterized using Auger electron spectroscopy in conjunction with sputter depth profiling. These data show that all of the Cr in the implanted region is bound as CrN, Cr oxides and Cr carbides at large total N+ doses. Furthermore, the N displaces the C in ABCD films producing N and C profiles that mimic each other in an inverse manner.

Notizen: Energy-resolved ESD data obtained from Ag(110) after exposure to oxygen at room temperature are presented. The oxygen is found to desorb predominantly as a hydroxyl species. The surface hydrogen apparently originates from the bulk silver and is only removed slowly over many sample anneals. OH+ desorbs with an energy of 4.7 eV, and H+ desorbs with an energy of 3.0 eV. The results suggest that oxygen adsorbs at two or more different bonding sites on this surface. OH+ desorbs by ESD from the most prevalent of these sites, and O+ desorbs from another site which seems to fill first upon oxygen exposure. The primary beam energy is an important ESD variable since exciting the Ag 3d core levels results in a substantial reduction in the OH+ desorption yield.

Notizen: A method is presented for performing angle-resolved electron energy loss spectroscopy (ARELS) using a doublepass cylindrical mirror analyzer (CMA) which contains an angle-resolving movable aperture. Both the electron gun contained in the CMA and an off-axis electron gun are used in these studies. The technique is illustrated by ARELS spectra taken from a cleaned polycrystalline tin surface because observing the behavior of the surface and bulk plasmon features provides a direct and simple way of assessing surface sensitivity. The spectra demonstrate that the incidence angle of the primary beam, the collection angle with respect to the sample normal and the primary beam energy all have a very large effect on surface senstivity.

Notizen: Polycrystalline tin oxide surfaces have been examined before and after reduction in 40 Torr of CO at 100 and 175°C using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), ion-scattering spectroscopy (ISS) and electron-stimulated desorption (ESD). The changes in the surface composition and chemical states of the surface species generally are subtle for the reductive conditions used. Some of the SnO2 is reduced to SnO and significant changes do occur with regard to the amounts and chemical forms of the hydrogen-containing species remaining after both the 100 and 175°C reductions.

Notizen: A commercial platinized tin oxide catalyst used for low-temperature CO oxidation has been characterized using ion scattering spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis before and after reduction in 40 Torr of CO for 1 h at various temperatures in the range 75-175°C. The reduction results in loss of surface oxygen, formation of metallic tin, conversion of platinum oxides to Pt—O—Sn and Pt(OH)2 and a small amount of metallic Pt which alloys with the tin. These results should be useful in understanding how the pretreatment temperature affects the catalytic activity of platinized tin oxide toward CO oxidation.

Notizen: Electron-stimulated desorption (ESD) was used to study the hydrogen present on cleaned and oxidized Si(100), Cleaning the surface by ion bombardment and annealing does not completely remove hydrogen from a Si(100) surface. Kinetic energy analysis of the hydrogen ions emitted through ESD shows that multiple states of adsorbed hydrogen are present. Electron beam exposure results in a depopulation of higher energy states. These states are repopulated upon annealing suggesting that the bulk silicon is a source of hydrogen. Oxygen exposure also results in a depopulation of the higher energy desorption states. Angle-resolved, energy-resolved ESD spectra of H+ from the cleaned Si(100) surface were also collected. They show that different hydrogen bonding states desorb at different angles relative to the surface plane with differing energy distributions.

Notizen: A source that is compact, durable and mounts on a standard standard ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) flange has been developed for the generation of hyperthermal oxygen atoms. In this source oxygen atoms permeate through an Ag membrane held at 500°C and are then emitted toward the target from the vacuum side of the membrane by electron-stimulated desorption. The current prototype model generates useable O-atom fluxes of ∼1012 atoms cm-2 s-1, and future modifications should increase this flux by 1-3 orders of magnitude. Based on the O+ energy distribution, the average O neutral energy is ∼5 eV with a fairly broad distribution (full width at half-maximum ∼3.6 eV). The information required for the development of this source and the design of the source are prsented.
