Notes: The ESR method has been used to investigate the structure and properties of highly drawn ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibres. The values of T50G, rotational correlation times and the free radical decay curves for fibres of various draw ratios have been obtained from ESR spectra. The model of soft domain formation in fibres at high draw ratios is used to explain the experimental results.

Notes: It has been ascertained that chemiluminescence-time curves for samples of poly(2,6-dimethyl-p-phenylene ether) blended with high-impact polystyrene containing polybutadiene yield a very reproducible pattern even at a temperature of 190°C. The chemiluminescence light emission has been associated with consumption of double bonds in polybutadiene, and a corresponding rate constant and activation energies of chemiluminescence decay from both the isothermal and nonisothermal parts of chemiluminescence-time curves have been determined. As demonstrated by these curves, an attempt, to stabilize the blends toward thermooxidation by the peroxide decomposer and stabilizer led to retardation of the oxidation process only and further investigation searching for an optimum stabilizing system is required. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Photocrosslinking of low-density polyethylene, (LDPE), polypropylene (PP) and their blends was investigated using xanthone and triallyl cyanurate as a photoinitiator and a coagent, respectively. The influence of the change of UV-irradiation conditions on the yield of photoinitiated processes was found to be very similar at any composition, while the crosslinking efficiency decreases with increase of PP content in the blend. The mechanism of the TAC action in photocrosslinking process was proposed and the effect of TAC reactions is discussed with regards to the effectivity of crosslinking of LDPE, PP, or the blends. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Crosslinking of polypropylene was investigated when initiated by thermal decomposition of organic peroxides. p-Benzoquinone was found to be an effective coagent of crosslinking. The efficiency of benzoquinone is about 5 times higher than that of polyfunctional monomers. Almost complete crosslinking of polypropylene can be reached at proper conditions.

Notes: The crosslinking of atactic and isotactic polypropylene initiated by organic peroxides in presence of diallyl maleate or pentaerythrityl tetramethacrylate was studied. The influence of concentration of the components of the crosslinking system as well as the effect of temperature and reaction time was followed. For high yield of gel, a high rate of initiation is necessary. Also the rate of reaction of double bonds must be similar to the rate of peroxide decomposition.

Notes: Crosslinking efficiency of isotactic polypropylene was studied as a function of the initiator used and of the reaction temperature. The decomposition rate of the initiator was found to be of prime importance for attaining the gel point. The over-all efficiency of the process is strongly influenced also by the type of the formed primary radicals and the reaction temperature. The ratio of the number of broken and newformed bonds determined according to the Charlesby-Pinner equation was found to be about 0.15 at high stationary macroradical concentration in the reaction system.

Notes: Crosslinked blends of low density polyethylene/isotactic polypropene (LDPE/iPP) were studied over the whole composition range. The degree of crosslinking was determined from the gel content and the degree of swelling. In the presence of a coagent an efficient crosslinking of polypropene can be observed in blends whereas in the absence of the coagent only the PE component is crosslinked.Thermal characterization of the blends by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), i.e. heat of fusion, melting and crystallization temperatures suggest that the crosslinking results in the formation of a structure with molecules of both components being mutually connected. A two-phase structure is still maintained and crosslinked molecules of polypropene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) are found at the interface. The effect of crosslinking on the rate of crystallization is different for PE and PP. This phenomenon is explained by the superposition of the influence of crosslinking on the rate of crystal growth and nucleation.

Notes: The crosslinking of drawn tapes and fibers from ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE) initiated by UV-irradiation has been investigated. Both xanthone and sulphuryl chloride (SO2Cl2) appeared to be rather effective photoinitiators and high gel content was obtained after UV-exposition in air. The effect of crosslinking on the properties of UHMW-PE tapes and fibers was examined by tensile tests, dynamic mechanical spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. High temperature resistance was shown to increase; photocrosslinked fibers retain the storage modulus being about 100 MPa at 200°C whereas uncrosslinked samples break at 135-137°C. No reducation of mechanical properties was found at ambient temperature and hydrophilization of the surface was observed.

Notes: The crosslinking of polyethylene was investigated in the presence of three different additives. The peroxide concentration at the gel point as well as the crosslinking efficiency were calculated. The additives act always negatively when peroxide concentration at the gel point is regarded. When the crosslinking efficiency is considered, hydroquinone and p-benzoquinone act as retarders while diallyl phthalate shows a promoting effect. The mechanism of additive action during crosslinking is discussed.
