Notes: Systematic studies were performed on interpolymer complex formation between Poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in THF-water mixtures of different compositions. Viscosity behaviour during complex formation in mixed solvents was found to be entirely different from that observed by other workers in aqueous and in pure organic solvents. The result are interpreted in terms of, (a) preferential solvation of the polymer, (b) Probable change in conformation of the polyelectrolyte moleculer. (c) association of complex molecules in a medium of low dielectric constant, and (d) expected disordering of bound water molecules around PEO by THF. Irrespective of solvent composition, interpolymer complex of PAA and PEO was always found to have 1:1 unit mole ratio.

Notes: Some phenolic oligomers of uniform structure, molecular weight, and with additional functional groups have been prepared by stepwise synthesis. These synthetic novolaks when mixed in various molecular proportions resemble p-cresol formaldehyde condensation polymers. A study has been made on the titration curves of the mixtures of synthetic compounds in nonaqueous media. A large number of breaks have been observed in the titration curves, and they occur in simple multiples of the calculated amount of base required to neutralize each acidic group in the various novolak molecules independently. An attempt has been made to interpret some of these observations in terms of intramolecular hydrogen bonding, ion-association, and homoconjugation.

Notes: Multicomponent interpolymer complexes have been prepared by interacting a phenolic copolymer of known composition with several non-ionic homopolymers, e.g., PVP, PEO, PVA and polyelectrolytes, such as PAA and PEI. The formation of these complexes has been studied by several techniques, such as viscometry, potentiometry, conductometry, and IR spectra. A scheme has been presented to explain the mode of interaction of the various component polymers.

Notes: Stability constant and related thermodynamic parameters (ΔH° and ΔS°) of a multicomponent intermacromolecular complex consisting of poly(acrylic acid-coacrylamide), poly(methacrylic acid-co-acrylamide) and poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) have been determined using known methods. A distinct stepwise disintegration of the complex at different temperatures has been observed, and this could be correlated with the stability constant and thermodynamic parameters calculated at various temperatures.

Description / Table of Contents: Mehrkomponentige Komplexe eines typischen Polyelektrolyten wie Polyacrylsäure (PAA) mit nichtionogenen Polymeren (PVP and PEO) und Übergangsmetallionen (Cu(ll) und NI(II)) wurden hergestellt und mittels Viskosimetrie, Potentiometrie, Leitfähigkeitsmessungen und IR-Spektroskopie untersucht. Ein Schema, welches die Bildung dieser Komplexe erklärt, wird vorgeschlagen.
Notes: Multicompoent complexes of a typical polyelectrolyte like poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) have been prepared by incorporating transition metal ions (e. g. Cu(ll) and Ni(ll)) and non-ionic polymers (e. g. PVP, PEO) in the polyelectrolyte chain in a definite sequence. The formation of these complexes has been studied by several techniques, such as viscometry, potentiometry, conductometry, and IR spectroscopy. A scheme is suggested to explain the mode of formation of such complexes.

Description / Table of Contents: Die Pfropfcopolymerisation von Acrylsäure auf Methylcellulose mit Kaliumpersulfat als Initiator wurde untersucht.
Notes: Grafting of acrylic acid onto methylcellulose backbone was studied using potassium persulfate as initiator. Different variables affecting the extent of grafting were studied. The copolymers with more than 20% grafting became insoluble in water. The solubility of the graft copolymer in different solvents and mixed solvents was studied.

Notes: Thermal stability and degradation kinetics of methyl cellulose, polyacrylamide and methyl cellulose grafted with different amounts of polyacrylamide were investigated by thermogravimetry. Polyacrylamide was found to be more stable than methyl cellulose. The thermal stabilities of the graft copolymeres lie in between these two extremes. The order of reaction, n, and energy of activation, E, of the thermal degradation were determined for all polymer samples. It was found that E for the degradation of polyacrylamide (41,4 kcal/mol = 173,2 kJ/mol) is higher than that of methyl cellulose (31,3 kcal/mol = 131,0 kJ/mol) and that E for the graft copolymers lies in between those of the two homopolymers. The over-all reaction order of the degradation reactions was found to be unity for all polymer samples investigated.

Notes: Attempts were made to explain the cosolvency or the solubilisation of polystyrene in cyclohexane/acetone mixtures at 30°C. Cyclohexane is a Φ-solvent for polystyrene at 35°C. and acetone is a non-solvent. The effective interaction parameter χms of Scott has been determined for the optimum solvent composition from the slope of a Stockmayer-Fixman plot as modified by Yamakawa. The value of unperturbed dimension obtained for polystyrene at this solvent composition coincides very well with that obtained in cyclohexane (Θ-solvent). The binary interaction parameter χ12, between the two liquids obtained from χms shows a certain amount of incompatibility between them. The values of λ*, the preferential adsorption coefficient, were calculated for the entire solvent spectrum assuming the binary interaction parameters χij as being independent of solvent composition. The inversion point (λ* = 0), the optimum solvent composition yielding [η]max, and the importance of χ123, the ternary interaction parameter, are discussed.
