Description / Table of Contents: The volume relaxation of PMMA and PC in the second order transition region was found to obey the same quantitative relationships as reported in the literature for PVC and PVAC. Sufficient agreement was also found with respect to the volume and enthalpy relaxation. This suggests both these processes to be based on similar molecular motions. The temperature dependence of the shift factor in the second order transition region can appropriately by described by the WLF equation. However, at low temperatures this concept proved to be insufficient. The analysis of the relaxation spectrum of PMMA by the PRIMAK model results in relaxation energy distributions having a maximum at about 67.5 kJ/mol and being characterized by a half width of 6.5 kJ/mol.

Description / Table of Contents: The dependence of the glass temperature on the cooling rate was investigated with PMMA, PS and PC within 0.031 and 10 K/min. the experimental results were found to agree sufficiently with those obtained by other methods of investigation. With the substances investigated a shift of the glass temperature of about 3 K per order of magnitude of frequency was observed. The second order transition is discussed with respect to known models (WLF model, fluctuation model, concept of ficitive temperature). Principally, the results were found to agree with those of calorimetric experiments.

Notes: Phase behaviour of poly(vinyl chloride)/poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(vinyl chloride)/poly(butyl methacrylate) blends prepared from solution was investigated using differential scanning calorimetry. Indications for compatibility were found only at small concentrations of the second component. Stereospecific association seems to be very important for such systems. Glass transition and melting behaviour is also influenced by the preparation method.
