Notes: A facile synthesis of a series of oxyethylene containing diisocyanates, the α,ω-bis(isocyanatophenoxy)alkanes and bis[2-(isocyanatophenoxy)ethyl] ethers, is described. The key step involves the uneventful decomposition of the corresponding diacylazides to the diisocyanates in the Curtius rearrangement reaction. Further, eight thermally stable oxyethylene containing polyimides were synthesized by the polycondensation reaction of two meta- and two para-oriented diisocyanates, namely, 1,2-bis(3-isocyanatophenoxy)ethane and 1,2-bis(4-isocyanatophenoxy)ethane, and bis[2-(3-isocyanatophenoxy)ethyl] ether and bis[2-(4-isocyanatophenoxy)ethyl] ether, with pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) in N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc). These polyimides were characterized by IR spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, viscosity measurements, and thermogravimetric analysis.

Notes: Two nonlinear dihydrazides, namely 1,2-bis(3-hydrazinocarbonylphenoxy)ethane and bis[2(3-hydrazinocarbonylphenoxy)ethyl] ether, were synthesized by the acylation reaction of hydrazine hydrate with the corresponding aromatic esters and were characterized by IR, 13C-NMR, and mass spectroscopy. These dihydrazides were each polycondensed with dianhydrides, benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA), and pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) to obtain poly(amic acid) with ηinh 0.60-0.85 dL/g in dimethylacetamide solution. These poly(amic acid)s were soluble in polar aprotic solvents like dimethylacetamide (DMAc), dimethyl formamide (DMF) and could be cast into transparent, tough, and flexible films that were cyclodehydrated to obtain amorphous, thermally stable polyamide-imides. The polymers were characterized by IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis.

Notes: Effect of latex concentration on the extent of epoxidation and physical properties of epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) was evaluated as a function of latex concentration in the range of 20-60% by weight. The epoxidation rate increased with increasing latex concentration. Physical properties and sequence distribution of an epoxy group of ENR with 30 mol % epoxy content was invariant with the latex concentration employed for epoxidation.

Notes: Four new formal-group-containing diisocyanates, namely, bis(3-isocyanatophenoxy) methane, bis(4-isocyanatophenoxy)methane, bis[2-(3-isocyanatophenoxy)ethyl] formal, and bis[2-(4-isocyanatophenoxy)ethyl] formal, were synthesized by the Curtius rearrangement from the corresponding dicarboxylic acids. The diisocyanates were polycondensed with pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and benzophenonetetracarboxylic dianhydride (BTDA) in dimethylacetamide (DMAc) to obtain formal-group-containing polyimides. These polyimides were characterized by viscosity measurements, IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis.
