Notes: A high density polyethylene grade is blended with two selected grades of linear low density polyethylene and the mechanical and rheological properties of the blends are evaluated over the entire composition range. The blends show sufficient compatibility in the solid phase and in the melt and hence they can be advantageously used to capitalize on their useful properties.

Notes: Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of polyurethane based on hydroxyterminated natural rubber with varying NCO/OH ratios and polystyrene were synthesized under different experimental conditions. These IPNs were found to make tough films. The IPNs were characterized by their physical, mechanical and morphological properties like density, Shore-A hardness, crosslink density, tensile strength and elongation at break. The IPNs exhibited an increasing trend in density, Shore-A hardness and tensile strength with increasing polystyrene content, while elongation at break decreased with similar variation in polystyrene content. The crosslink density measurements indicated a possible phase inversion process.

Notes: A carbon black filled 50/50 natural rubber (NR)/styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) blend is vulcanized using several conventional curing systems designed by varying the amounts of sulphur and accelerator. The cure characteristics and the properties of the vulcanizates are compared. The quantity and quality of crosslinks in each case are evaluated by chemical probes to correlate them with the vulcanizate properties.

Notes: Gum compounds of natural rubber (NR) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) are vulcanized at different temperatures and the cure characteristics and vulcanizate properties are compared. The optimum cure time at a particular vulcanization temperature could be expressed empirically in terms of that temperature using an exponential relation. The crosslink density of the vulcanizates is found to decrease with an increase in the vulcanization temperature. For a given compound there is a particular vulcanization temperature which gives the best compromise of properties for specific applications.

Notes: Synthesis of hydride terminated methylhydro-dimethylsiloxane copolymers from the hydrolyzates of 10, 20, 30, 50 and 70% vol.-% dichloromethylsilane with dichlorodimethylsilane have been carried out. The copolymers were characterized by IR-and 1H-NMR-spectroscopy and standard chemical analysis. They were used as curatives for a standard vinyl functional room temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone material based on addition cure, and the vulcanizate properties have been evaluated. The copolymers with high hydride content gave better mechanical properties and thermal stability to the vulcanizates.

Notes: Studies conducted on butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer (NBR)/poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) blends at different temperatures indicate that an optimum temperature exists for the formation of a particular blend. The mechanical properties of the blends confirm this observation. PVC stabilizer based on magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, and stearic acid was found to be very useful in NBR/PVC blends.

Notes: Photochemical degradation of natural rubber yielded hydroxyl-terminated liquid natural rubber (HTNR) when carried out in solution in presence of H2O2. Ultraviolet radiation from a medium pressure mercury vapor lamp and sunlight were found to be almost equally effective in bringing about the depolymerization and hydroxylation of natural rubber. The variations in the composition of the reagents and exposure time on the extent of depolymerization was conducted, and a suitable procedure for the large scale preparation of HTNR was described. A probable mechanism leading to the formation of HTNR as well as the side products is discussed based on the analytical data.
