Notes: In units for the production of nitric acid and urea high-alloyed stainless steels and special metals are subject of high corrosive stresses. The choice of material must be adapted to the individual conditions regarding temperature and concentration of the components of reaction. The influence of metallurgical means and the applicability of standardized corrosion tests are discussed.A new bimetallic tube concept is described for stripper tubes in urea plants.

Description / Table of Contents: Fracture Mechanics Characterization of Fatigue in SiSiCThe behaviour of microscopic “natural” cracks and of artificial sharp cracks was investigated on a fracture mechanics base for extruded and slip casted SiSiC. The resulting strength and crack propagation data were used to calculate relations between loading time and probability of fracture and thus provide a base for the practical application of the investigated materials in structures. Examples of calculated life times and probabilities of failure as well as results of experiments performed to check the calculations are discussed.

Notes: The aim of the last part of this general study is to analyze the influence of the interfacial properties and, more precisely, the adhesion energy, between carbon fibers and PEEK on the final performance of unidirectional composites. A set of mechanical properties, i.e. interlaminar shear strength, longitudinal tensile and compressive and transverse tensile properties, of different unidirectional laminates with the same content (60% by volume) of carbon fibers is determined. It is first shown that the interlaminar shear strength is constant, whatever the type of materials. Therefore, this test is not appropriate to characterize the strength of the fiber-matrix interface in PEEK-based composites. On the contrary, in agreement with previous work on other systems, it appears that the ultimate properties (longitudinal tensile and compressive as well as transverse tensile strengths and strains) of the laminates increase with the interfacial adhesion energy, whereas the stiffness of these composites remains unaffected in all cases.

Notes: The present study analyzes the kinetics of the in vivo degradation of hydrophilic Mitrathane® in the peritoneal cavity of mice over a period ranging from 1 to 180 days. The mechanical milling of the polyurethane films produced regularly flattened fragments that in vivo spontaneously oriented into piles. The morphological observations and analysis with the aid of an image analysis system demonstrated that after seven days of swelling the polymer fragments undergo a continuous degradation that leads to an irregular thinning and phagocytosis of the smaller fragments by macrophages with very little chronic inflammation response from surrounding tissues. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The slow crack propagation velocity v, which depends on the stress intensity factor K, has been measured for three different high-density aluminas. Assuming a load history for the prosthesis which approximates conditions during walking, the lifetimes of the components of a total hip endoprothesis were calculated as a function of the initial flaw size. Different geometries for the preexisting cracks, as well as varying physiological parameters, were considered. It is shown that the lifetime is very dependent on the quality of the material and that it is reduced by increased body weight, walking speed, and varus positioning. Comparison of failure behavior in different parts of the femoral component showed that flaws in the stem must be one order of magnitude smaller than those in the neck to achieve comparable lifetimes.
