Notes: Abstract Studies using affinity chromatography and ultracentrifugation indicate that in human blood 40–50% of lipid hydroperoxides are transported by apoB-lipoproteins, 20% by high-density lipoproteins, and 30–40% by albumins and other proteins. Affinity-isolated apoB-lipoproteins from umbilical blood contain smaller amounts of lipid hydroperoxides than do those from the blood of healthy adults, while the content of lipid hydroperoxides in apoB-lipoproteins from the blood of patients with ischemic heart disease is often higher. Aortal apoB-lipoproteins are considerably enriched in these hydroperoxides.

Notes: A geometric method proposed by Kaelble and Moacanin for analyzing energetic characteristics of solid surfaces is discussed. It is shown that a number of characteristics can be presented in a visual geometric form. The method is applied to the analysis of adhesion in a three-component system. Results of the analysis, concerned with the problem of creation of biocompatible materials, support the Andrade hypothesis that materials with zero interfacial tension of their water-solid interface show maximum biocompatibility. Data are obtained on wetting of polyethylene by different liquids before and after glow discharge plasma treatment. The analysis of these data in terms of geometric method shows the plasma treatment increased the polar component of the polymer surface energy to change the surface adhesiveness toward probable enhancement of polymer biocompatibility. That is consistent with available data on glow-discharge-treatment enhancement of biocompatibility for a number of polymers. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The samples of radiationally linked vinyl (1%) methylsilicone elastomer (silicone) were modified in glow-discharge air plasma. Surface relaxation was studied by the data on equilibrium contact angles. The degree of relaxation is shown to increase with increasing plasma treatment duration, probably due to the increase in the destruction degree of the spatial network of chemical bonds in the silicone surface layer. The changes in the chemical composition of the surface were controlled using attenuated total reflectance-infrared spectroscopy. Plasma treatment leads to increase of the polar component of the polymer surface energy and increase of the absorption bands of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups in its spectra. These characteristics disappear when the samples are kept in the open air and can be recovered by putting them into water. Such behavior can be explained by the fact that the polar oxygen-containing groups, forming on the surface due to plasma treatment, pass inside the polymer. Considering the adhesion properties of modified silicone, its biocompatibility was predicted. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: A systematic study has been carried out on the kinetic and structural matrix effects in acceptor-catalytic polyesterification conducted in the presence of fillers. The filler exerts a different influence on the reactivity of aromatic and aliphatic hydroxylated compounds, which is reflected in the microstructure of the synthesized copolyesters. Filler introduction at the stage of polymer synthesis is established to raise its molecular mass characteristics and to improve the antifrication properties of filled systems.
