Notes: Abstract The Dan river, a principal source of the Jordan River, Israel, is unusually constant in discharge (∼8 m3·s−1) and water temperature (15–16 °C). The Jordan headwaters constitute the southernmost oasis of a palearctic north temperate fauna, and presumably the very constancy of the Dan contributes to its important role as a regional refuge. However, little is known of river ecology from this region. We report a twelve month study of drift, undertaken to assess diel, seasonal, and spatial patterns of the abundance of drifting invertebrates. Diel periodicity in drift was detectable but minimal. Baetidae nymphs showed a pronounced nocturnal increase, gammarid amphipods a modest, twofold increase, while dipteran larvae showed no diel variation. Seasonal variation likewise was minimal and due principally to the Baetidae, while gammarid amphipods showed no significant seasonality. The notably small diel and seasonal variation in aquatic drift in the Dan may be attributable to the extremely constant physical regime. Spatial variation was substantial. Two stations located 30 and 200 m below the karstic exsurgence of the Dan provided drift densities among the lowest reported anywhere, whereas two stations located 1 and 4.5 km downstream had more typical drift densities. A water diversion project completed halfway through the study resulted in a 50% reduction in flow at the most downstream stations, but had no discernible effect on drift.

Notes: Abstract An extensive series of drift collections from a Rocky Mountain stream was used to investigate quantitative patterns in the taxonomic composition of drift throughout spring, summer and fall for 1975–1978. Drift was estimated by drift rate, the number of organisms drifting past a point per 24 h; and by drift density, the numbers of organisms collected per 100 m3 of water sampled. Drift densities were up to ten times greater by night than by day, and 24 h drift densities for the total fauna approached 2000 per 100 m3 in June–July, declining to 〈500 by autumn. Ephemeroptera, and especially Baetis, dominated the drift. Drift rates were greatest in late spring, around 106 per 24 h, which are among the highest values reported for small trout streams. Drift rates declined to 〈105 during the summer, and shifts in the taxonomic composition are described. Multiple regression analysis of the relationship between drift rate and density, and the independent variables discharge, benthic density and temperature, showed that discharge typically was a significant predictor of 24 h drift rate, usually the best single predictor. In contrast, 24 h drift density most frequently was independent of discharge, indicating that this measure tends to correct for seasonal variation in discharge, as suggested in the literature. However, this was not invariably true. Drift density significantly correlated with benthic density in five of eight taxa inspected, thus seasonal declines in the benthos probably accounted for parallel declines in drift density.

Notes: Abstract We examined the relationship between drift and foraging activity in Gammarus pulex L. by comparing collections from the benthos, drift, and small traps baited with cheese. Two sites were employed, one with both sculpins and trout, and one lacking fish. Baited traps collected large numbers of G. pulex within as little as 15 min, demonstrating the effectiveness of chemical attractants. Limnephilid larvae also were attracted rapidly, and no counteracting influence on either taxon could be detected to result from a sculpin in an adjacent cage. Trap collections indicate a highly aggregated distribution and suggest that one use of this approach is for detecting small scale spatial patterns. Individuals of small size comprised the majority of the G. pulex population. Of three size categories used ( 〈 4, 4–8, 〉 8 mm total length), between 63 and 67% of the benthic collections were 〈 4 mm long. Traps captured exclusively the two largest size classes of G. pulex. Drift collections consisted almost exclusively (93–100%) of 〈 4 mm individuals during the day, and larger G. pulex appeared only in the night drift. Based on stomach analysis, trout and sculpins selectively captured larger prey but this preference was proportional to fish size, as small sculpins captured relatively smaller prey. The rarity of larger G. pulex in the daytime drift appears to be attributable to greater risk of predation by day, but not to the absence of foraging activity in the amphipod, as baited traps and direct observation indicated that G. pulex is continuously active.

Notes: A transformation reaction from anionic to metathesis was used to prepare block copolymers of styrene and cyclopentene. The composition of the products was established by elemental and UV analysis. A mechanism for the formation of the propagating centre in the olefin metathesis reaction was postulated that will account for the incorporation of the alkyl group of the cocatalyst in the first formed metal carbene.

Notes: The complex series of reactions that takes place between WCl6 and cyclopentene was studied spectroscopically. The products of reaction remain soluble when chlorobenzene is used as solvent. A number of intermediates was observed and the kinetics of formation and removal of these was studied in detail. A complex series of reactions was postulated to account for these changes and the significance of each reaction to the overall scheme was determined by computer simulation of the changes that occur. One of the products has particular significance in the scheme of reactions since it is believed that this species is eventually responsible for the monometallic initiation of the polymerization of cyclopentene. The reaction was also studied gas chromatographically when it was shown that the reaction is accompanied by the formation of a complex mixture of products. One of these products was shown to have the mass spectrum that would be expected of 3-chlorocyclopentene and a reaction scheme that would account for its formation is postulated. The reactions involved in the generation of centres active towards the formation of polypentenamer were considered for both monometallic and bimetallic (WCl6/AlR3) catalyst.

Notes: The kinetics of the pyridine-initiated polymerisation of simple 1,3-oxathiolan-2,5-diones (3a-c) in nitrobenzene was studied at various temperatures. Results show that, although the substituents in 4-position have a marked effect on rate of polymerisation, the polymerisation of the three monomers studied is linked by a common mechanism. Thus, the pyridine, nucleophile attacks the carbonyl in 5-position and forms a charge transfer complex which decomposes to form a highly reactive α-thiolactone intermediate 8 together with carbon dioxide and pyridine. Chain addition continues by the direct attack on the thiolactone by the terminal-SH group of traces of parent acid. The reaction of each of the three monomers with pyridine was found to show first order kinetic dependence on both monomer and pyridine, although the initiator (i.e. pyridine) is not consumed. The resultant polymers (molecular weight typically around 20000) are highly crystalline and relatively insoluble in common organic solvents.

Notes: The polymerization of cyclopentene in the presence of an unsaturated ester led to the synthesis of low-molecular-weight polypentenamer with a terminal functional group by ringopening metathesis polymerization using WCl6/AlEtCl2/EtOH as catalyst. Unlike most reactions of this nature the efficiency of the catalyst system is high because the ester used possesses an electron withdrawing group, the trichloromethyl group. The presence of this group ensures that the complex formed between the metal carbene complex and the ester group is reduced in stability and catalyst concentrations normally used for ring-opening metathesis polymerizations can be used (mole ratio W : CP = 1 : 1000), the concentrations of ester being quite high (mole ratio ester : CP = 1 : 5). Under these conditions reasonably high yields of liquid polymers are obtained.

Notes: The repair of an osteochondral defect in rabbit femur was studied with three kinds of bioactive glasses (BG), hydroxyapatite (HA), and hydroxyapatite-glass (HAG) composite. Seventy-two osteochondral defects were created in 18 rabbits. Sixty-four cylinders were implanted and eight defects were left empty as controls. Histomorphometry, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDXA) were used for evaluation. Small osteochondral defects in rabbit femur found to heal themselves by regeneration. The three BGs, HA, and HAG led to direct lamellar bone repair of subchondral bone and restoration of articular surfaces mostly with hyalinelike cartilage in 12 weeks. However, the composition of the materials affects their behavior. Chondrogenesis took place earlier with the BGs than with HA. HAG degraded too much, glass 14 was too reactive and brittle, and the high alumina content in glass 11 disturbed its bone-bonding ability. Glass 7 and HA were the most balanced in the repair process. A special preparation method was used to retain soft tissues fairly unchanged and enable them to the observed together with hard tissues in SEM analysis. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
