    Notes: SUMMARY. 1. Measurements were made of the attenuation and spectral distribution of downwelling and upwelling photosynthetically-available radiation (PAR) in all the principal types of natural waters found in Tasmania.2. Most lakes in the State are clear and non-turbid, with water itself and the low concentrations of gilvin being the principal determinants of the green underwater light climate. Many others are deeply coloured by dissolved and colloidal organic material (gilvin, gelbstoff) which rapidly attenuates short wavelengths, specifying a shallow, predominantly red euphotic zone.3. A spectrophotometric measure of colour, the absorption coefficient at 440 nm, is statistically related to measurements on the platinum scale with good precision.4. Few Tasmanian lakes are turbid but in those that are the underwater light climate is almost identical to that of non-turbid, humic lakes.5. Reflectance, R, varied with depth but not in the asymptotic way previously encountered. A linear relationship existed between the scattering coefficient, b, and nephelometric turbidity, but not at the approximate 1:1 ratio reported elsewhere.6. Most Tasmanian lakes are oligotrophic or dystrophic and phytoplankton rarely influenced the underwater light field.7. Seasonal variation in optical character is not great in natural lakes and their optical properties and light fields can be used typologically.8. Simple and multiple regression analysis showed that Secchi depth was a poor predictor of euphotic depth but the optical properties and the underwater light field of inaccessible lakes could be reasonably predicted from laboratory measurements made on small water samples, using regressions developed for a wide range of lake types and by reference to the quantaradiometric scans of lakes with comparable optical properties.9. An optical classification of Tasmanian lakes made by cluster analysis agreed reasonably well with one based on edaphic, vegetational and chemical criteria.

The inherent optical properties (scattering coefficients and absorption coefficients across the photosynthetic waveband) are presented from diverse tropical water bodies (billabongs) in the Alligator Rivers Region of northern Australia.2. The data are used to interpret observed characteristics of the underwater light field as exemplified by the spectral distribution, and overall rate of attenuation, of photosynthetically available radiation (PAR).3. Attenuation of PAR, especially in the blue waveband, is caused primarily by intense light absorption by the yellow-brown humic pigments, both soluble and particulate, in the water.4. It was estimated that in six moderately turbid billabongs, light scattering increased attenuation by an average of 58% above that attributable to absorption alone, whereas in a highly turbid billabong the increase was 111%.5. A distinguishing feature of the optical character of these billabongs, compared with previously studied water bodies in southern Australia, is the great contribution to light absorption made by the particulate humic material.

    Notes: Abstract The post-larval skeletal plate ontogeny of the ophiuroids Ophiura ophiura (Linnaeus) and Acrocnida brachiata (Montagu) from the recently metamorphosed 0.3 mm disc diameter size to a juvenile size of 2.0 mm disc diameter has been examined using scanning electron microscopy. Post-larval development of O. albida Forbes is briefly described for sizes between 1.0 and 2.0 mm disc diameter. Early post-larval development in the 0.2 to 1.0 mm discsize range involves considerable morphogenetic change and necessitates the use of a developmental series in the identification of newly settled ophiuroids. Comparison of these ophiuroids with other closely related species reveals that the post-larvae are readily distinguishable at even the smallest sizes by their transient post-larval morphologies. Abbreviated larval development in A. brachiata is suggested from the egg size and post-larval form. The ophiuroid post-larvae were collected from the shallow sublittoral of Oxwich Bay, Bristol Channel, UK, during the years 1980 to 1982.

    Notes: Abstract Samples of the deep-sea spinulosan asteroid Hymenaster membranaceus Wyville Thomson were collected in a timeseries of 19 bottom trawls spanning the period April 1978 to October 1981 from a 2200 m-deep station in the northern Rockall Trough. The reproductive biology of this species was studied from histological sections of the gonad, and compared with that of H. gennaeus H. L. Clark which was collected in the same hauls. At first sexual development, oogonia develop in nests surrounded by small accessory cells. Previtellogenic oocytes remain in the periphery but, at maturity, oocytes ranging up to 1 100 μm fill the ovary. A variety of accessory cells pack the lumen and may be nutritive or degenerative. It appears that a small number of oocytes are spawned intermittently, but there is no evidence of overproduction and break-down of superfluous oocytes. A few large oocytes become senescent and undergo internal break-down, releasing periodic acid Schiff-positive material into the lumen. Size-frequencies of oocytes indicate that eggs may be spawned as a continuous slow release, and there is no evidence of reproductive synchrony between or within samples. On reaching maturity, males appear always to be ready to release spermatozoa. Spawning is probably stimulated by egg release during chance encounters with mature females. There is no evidence for brooding, and from the large size and yolky nature of the egg direct lecithotrophic development at or near the seabed is inferred. A limited histological study of H. gennaeus indicates that egg production is very similar, but the two species differ in the nature of the accessory cells and amorphous material filling the lumen.

    Notes: Abstract Evidence is presented that stalked, budding bacteria (hyphomicrobia) are responsible for the deposition of manganese in certain freshwater pipelines in Tasmania. Laboratory-scale equipment is described which allows manganese oxidation to be studied under controlled conditions. In some pipelines the lack of deposition is due to insufficient manganese in the lake water and not to absence of the appropriate hyphomicrobia. The composition of the pipeline deposits in Tasmania and other parts of the world are strikingly similar, and it is suggested that hyphomicrobia occur in manganese deposits more frequently than has been recorded.
