Notes: The relaxation behavior of nylon 6 from 4.2 to 300°K was investigated as a function of orientation, anisotropy and moisture content by using an inverted free-oscillating torsion pendulum. Three new relaxations, δ at 53°K, ∊ below 4.2°K, and ζ at 20°K, were discovered. The characteristics of these new relaxations strongly depend on the orientation anisotropy, and concentration of adsorbed water in the specimens. The results suggest that the mechanism of the γ process is associated with the motions of both the polar and methylene units. The mechanism of the β relaxation is postulated to originate with motions of both non-hydrogen-bonded polar groups and polymer - water complex units. The behavior of the α peak is consistent with the hypothesis that it originates with the rupture of interchain hydrogen bonding due to the motions of long-chain segments in the amorphous regions. Finally, the data strongly support the proposition that two types of water, tightly bound and loosely bound, exist in nylon 6.

Notes: Gas barrier properties of alkylsulfonylmethyl-substituted poly(oxyalkylene)s are discussed. Oxygen permeability coefficients of three methylsulfonylmethyl-substituted poly(oxyalkylene)s, poly[oxy(methylsulfonylmethyl)ethylene] (MSE), poly[oxy(methylsulfonylmethyl)ethylene-co-oxyethylene] (MSEE), and poly[oxy-2,2-bis (methylsulfonylmethyl)trimethylene oxide] (MST) were measured. MSEE, which has the most flexible backbone of the three polymers, had an oxygen permeability coefficient at 30°C of 0.0036 × 10-13 cm3(STP)·cm/cm2·s·Pa higher than that of MSE, 0.0014 × 10-13 cm3(STP)·cm/cm2·s·Pa, because the former polymer's Tg was near room temperature. MST with two polar groups per repeat unit and the highest Tg showed the highest oxygen permeability, 0.013 × 10-13 cm3(STP) · cm/cm2·s·Pa, among the three polymers, probably because steric hindrance between the side chains made the chain packing inefficient. As the side chain length of poly[oxy(alkylsulfonylmethyl)ethylene] increased, Tg and density decreased and the oxygen permeability coefficients increased. The oxygen permeability coefficient of MSE at high humidity (84% relative humidity) was seven times higher than when it was dry because absorbed water lowered its Tg. At 100% relative humidity MSE equilibrated to a Tg of 15°C after 2 weeks. A 50/50 blend of MSE/MST had oxygen barrier properties better than the individual polymers (O2 permeability coefficient is 0.0007 × 10-13 cm3(STP)·cm/cm2 ·s·Pa), lower than most commercial high barrier polymers. At 100% relative humidity, it equilibrated to a Tg of 42°C, well above room temperature. These are polymer systems with high gas barrier properties under both dry and wet conditions. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 36: 75-83, 1998

Notes: A number of reaction variables in the solution synthesis of lead (IV) polyesters were examined. Both electronic nature of the diacid and lead-containing material is important, with an increase in yield resulting as the nucleophilicity of the salt increases. Diffusion is also an important factor. Reaction is favored by an increase in the concentration of reactants.

Notes: Synthesis of titanium polyamines was accomplished with “inverse” and “normal” interfacial and aqueous solution systems. Yield was independent of the usual reaction parameters for substituents on p-phenylenediamine for the interfacial systems but might be dependent on the particular diffusion rates of the diamines. Yield decreases as the nucleophilicity of the diamine decreases for the aqueous solution systems. Yield is independent of pH, decreases with reduction in reactant concentration and increases with increases in the amine: Cp2TiCl2 ratio for both normal interfacial and aqueous solution systems.

Notes: Synthesis of zirconium poly-O-amidoximes was affected by using both interfacial and aqueous solution techniques. Reaction is rapid. The yield for the synthesis of analogous titanium product is Cp2ZrCl2 〉 Cp2TiCl2 which is consistent with that predicted by the hard-soft acid-base theory.

Notes: The influence of base type on polymerization and on polymer properties in the synthesis of polysilylalkylene(arylene)diamines by a modified interfacial system was investigated. The modified system utilizes 2,5-hexanedione or acetonitrile in place of the usual aqueous solvent. Protonation of both diamine and amine groups in the polymer chain is important when NaOH or diamine itself is employed as the base. Protonation is unimportant when triethylamine is used. In triethylamine systems the highest yield is formed with the silane containing the most electron-deficient silicon, and the highest molecular weight products are formed with the least sterically hindered silane. When NaOH or diamine itself is employed there is no apparent correlation between silane and amine electronic or steric nature and any of the measured polymer properties. As diamine solubility decreases, polymer yield increases.

Notes: The first interfacial synthesis of polyalkyloxysilanes of the form where R′ = alkylene, and R″, R = alkyl or aryl is reported. It is found, in the range studied for the stirred systems, that as organic solvent viscosity and organic phase volume are increased, rate of polymer formation is decreased. Little difference in polymer formation rate is observed when the nature of the diol is varied, but considerable difference is noted when the nature of the organosilane is varied such that the most electropositive silane has the highest rate of polymer formation. Molecular weight is approximately constant as diol is changed but varies markedly when the silane is changed, so that the silane with the most bulky substance will give polymer with the lowest molecular weight.
