Notizen: Abstract A method is described for the simultaneous determination of very low levels of Co and Cr by high performance ion chromatography coupled with a chemiluminescence detection system. 0.1M K2SO4 solutions, adjusted to pH 3.0, were used as eluent to separate Co(II) and Cr(III) between them and from interferents. The detection system was the chemiluminescence of luminol/ H2O2 in alkaline medium catalyzed by such transition metals. Using a matrix solution analogous to soda-lime silica glass (dissolved in acids) calibration graphs were linear up to 0.5 ng ml−1 for cobalt and up to 250 ng ml−1 for chromium. The corresponding calculated detection limits (3 s) in such matrix were 0.05 ng ml−1 and 15 ng ml−1 for Co and Cr, respectively. The relative standard deviations were 1.4% at 0.5 ng ml−1 Co level and 2.8% at the 200 ng ml−1 Cr level. No interferences were observed from the more common metals, particularly those present in glass samples. The ion chromatography/ chemiluminescent method proposed has been successfully applied to the analysis of Co and Cr in glasses.

Notizen: Abstract Gracilaria tenuistipitata Zhang et Xia was cultured for 15 d at low, normal and high inorganic carbon concentrations under constant light, temperature and nutrient conditons. Carbonic anhydrase (CA; EC 4.2.1.1.) activity, ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/ oxygenase (Rubisco; EC 4.1.1.39) content, pigment content and C/N ratio were measured, and also the photosynthesis and growth rates. Both Rubisco content and CA activity increased under conditions of low inorganic carbon (Ci) but decreased at high Ci with respect to the control. The amount of pigments declined considerably at high Ci and was slightly higher at low Ci. The maximum rate of photosynthesis and the photosynthetic efficiency increased in low Ci and the opposite was found at high Ci concentration. The effects of Ci concentration on maximum rate of photosynthesis and photosynthetic efficiency are discussed in relation to the variation in pigment and Rubisco contents and CA activity. The data indicate that Ci may be an important factor controlling the photosynthetic physiology of G. tenuistipitata with regard, not only to the enzymes of Ci metabolism, but also to the pigment content.

Notizen: Abstract The Isabela Crater-Lake is a bright-green, hypersaline lake (68–112.5 mS cm-1) on Isabela Island off the Pacific coast of Nayarit, Mexico. Some salient features were documented in November 1993. It appears meromictic, with three well-defined strata separated by sharp pycnoclines. Surface water was warm (32 °C) reaching a subsurface (0.5–1 m) maximum temperature (33 °C), declining gradually to 26.7 °C at maximum depth (17.5 m). Dissolved oxygen was near saturation at the surface, attained 145 percent saturation at 0.5 m, but was completely absent by 2.5 m. Eh was maximum at the surface (123 mV), declining to a minimum at 3 m (–261 mV), and was about –240 mV from 3.5 m to the bottom. The pH varied from 9.3 in surface waters to slightly acid (6.4) in deep anoxic layers. Atypically, NO3 was more abundant than NH4 in both aerobic and anaerobic strata. PO4 and SiO2 concentrations were extremely high. The planktonic microbial community was formed by four groups: bacteria (photosynthetic sulfur bacteria and heterotrophic bacteria), phytoflagellates (mainly cryptomonads), heterotrophic nanoflagellates ( Spumella spp., Bodo spp.) and ciliates (Hypotricha and Oligotricha). Bacteria occurred throughout the water column, but other biota were restricted to surface waters.
