Summary An attempt was undertaken to investigate the phase transion in C-18 bonded reversed-phase silica by the positron annihilation technique. It was found that the longest-lived component in the postron lifetime spectrum, describing the annihilation in the pores, exhibits a small increase of its intensity in the region of 16–23°C, which can be explained by the straightening of thealkyl chains above the phase transtion point.
