Summary Crystalline bodies, observed within the intercellular spaces of the gametophyte-sporophyte junction of the hornwortPhaeoceros laevis, were composed of alternating light and dark bands about 6 nm in width. They stained positively with all protein stains employed but not with periodic acid-Schiffs reagent suggesting a protein composition. The crystals were degraded during development indicating possible utilization of the protein components. The occurrence of intercellular protein crystals is unusual and further work is necessary to determine the exact nature of these crystals and their function, if any.
