Description: Report pulls together information on imaging radar polarimetry from a variety of sources. Topics include theory, equipment, and experimental data. Reviews state of the art, examines current applicable developments in radar equipment, describes recording and processing of radar polarimetric measurements, and discusses interpretation and application of resulting polarimetric images.

Description: Report presents comparative analysis of two approaches to calibration of synthetic-aperture radar (SAR). Performed in context of NASA/JPL SAR system mounted in DC-8 airplane, also applicable to any polarimetric SAR system of similar design. Demonstrates functional equivalence of two approaches to calibration. In one, known as Klein's approach, SAR data calibrated supplied in scattering-matrix format. Other named after van Zyl, data calibrated supplied in Stokes-matrix (compressed) format.

Description: Two algorithms processing polarimetric synthetic-aperture-radar data found effective in assigning various parts of SAR images to classes representing different types of terrain. Partially automate interpretation of SAR imagery, reducing amount of photointerpretation needed and putting whole interpretation process on more quantitative and systematic basis. First algorithm implements Bayesian classification scheme "supervised" by use of training data. Second algorithm implements classification procedure unsupervised.

Description: Paper reviews mathematical models of polarimetric radar backscattering characteristics of various types of terrain; forests, grasslands, and lava fields. Represents approach to imaging radar polarimetry in which one accumulates models predicting realistic polarization signatures and represent distinct scattering processes, without attempting full vector solutions of Maxwell's equations in all cases. Idea to develop ability to invert models to identify unknown terrain depicted in polarimetric radar images. Describes models, major scattering characteristics predicted by models, and interpretation of characteristics in terms of dominant scattering mechanisms. Models predict realistic polarization signatures.

Description: Theoretical analysis of polarization filtering of synthetic-aperture-radar (SAR) returns provide hybrid method applied to either (1) maximize signal-to-noise ratio of return from given target or (2) enhance contrast between targets of two different types (that have different polarization properties). Method valid for both point and extended targets and for both monostatic and bistatic radars as well as SAR. Polarization information in return signals provides more complete description of radar-scattering properties of targets and used to obtain additional information about targets for use in classifying them, discriminating between them, or enhancing features of radar images.

Description: Scattering mechanisms identified via polarization signatures. Algorithm automatically classifies radar-backscattering mechanisms in images produced by synthetic-aperture-radar polarimeter. Uses full polarimetric data from each picture element. These data generally expressed in terms of complex 2 by 2 scattering matrix equivalent to three independent amplitudes and three independent phases representing relationships between horizontally- and vertically-polarized components of transmitted and backscattered signals.
