Abstract. The physical basis of the conventional master equation used for the description of microstructure evolution under continuous irradiation is examined. It is rigorously shown that in this equation only fluctuations of point-defect fluxes caused by the randomness of migratory jumps alone are considered. Taking into account also the stochastic effects caused by the random nature of the cascade occurrence shows that this contribution is very important and its omission may introduce significant errors in the description of microstructure evolution by the conventional master equation.
