Notes: Statistical design and planning of experiments by the BOX-WILSON method is briefly reviewed. The automation of the associated calculations by means of an electronic computer is then described. The main elements in setting up the programming sequence are itemized and developed in some detail. A numerical example is given to illustrate evaluation by computer and the advantages obtainable, i.e., speed, reliability, and flexibility in the choice of experimental design. The greater ease of operation made possible by automation is expected to enhance the attractiveness and the scope of the BOX-WILSON method quite considerably.

Notes: The optimization of the distribution of residence times for ideal, isothermal, stirred-tank reactor cascades in the steady state is examined. By means of the method of dynamic programming it is shown that the optimal policy of such a cascade is uniform for a system involving any combination of first order reactions, thus forming a principle for a whole class of optimization problems. The values of the optimum residence time and of the corresponding maximum yield can be calculated with the given formulas if the rate constants are known.

Notes: The growing complexity of the problems the chemical engineer faces nowadays calls ever more urgently for the development of systematic methods yielding not just a random solution, but the best possible or optimal one. Our endeavours to find an adequate too for this purpose have drawn our attention to the theory of dynamic programming developed some years ago by Bellman in the field of operational research. In this paper the method is explained by means of an example: the optimization of a cascade of continuous, stirred tank reactors with respect to yield, achieved in our case by optimal distribution of the total residence time between the vessels.
