Description: The first of eight X-ray telescopes is under construction for the LAMAR experiment. Each consists of two orthogonal sets of nested confocal one-dimensional parabolic plates of gold-coated float glass, selected for flatness from commercial stock. Each is initially bent to a cylinder by bonding a thin, highly curved titanium sheet to its inactive surface. The final parabolic figure is produced by an automated system which includes seven diode arrays that detect a visible-light line image. Eight precise motorized linear translators operating under the control of a computer, tune the plate to the optimum figure. The plate is then fixed in position by epoxy bonds. The precision of the system is several arcsec, but the intrinsic flatness of the glass is expected to limit the half-power diameter (HPD) of the telescope to about 25 arcsec.

Description: The development of glass microcapillary arrays by Kumakhov and co-workers in the Soviet Union suggests that it is possible to construct novel devices for concentrating and focussing X-ray beams. Hypothetical focussing concentrators made up of capillary arrays have been configured to operate over a broad range of X-ray energy and its characteristics have been studied with a Monte Carlo ray tracing code. These modeling results indicate that the concentrators would have significant effective area up to 100 keV while their dimensions are similar to conventional grazing incidence telescopes that operate in the soft X-ray band.

Description: During the past year the technical approach to the realization of a high throughput Kirkpatrick-Baez X-ray mirror became better defined in terms of construction methodology and factors which affect maximum size. More progress was made than anticipated in the area of automatic figure formation. However, effort to improve the resolution of float glass by simple techniques were not successful. Mirror development, spectroscopy, all sky telescope, and explorer concept studies are discussed.
