    Description: A variety of options for a short wavelength spectrometer for the Lyman telescope has been studied, and the optimum configuration for this instrument identified. In this spectrometer option study it is assumed (consistent with performance goals outlined by the project) that the instrument, whose prime spectral domain is 900-12000A, will incorporate a grazing incidence telescope which will maintain good collecting efficiency down to 100A. In particular it is assumed that the telescope will have an effective focal length of 10 meters, an image quality of 1.5", and will provide a diverging f/10 beam. Designs compatible with this telescope are analyzed, and it is determined that a two-element grazing incidence spectrometer using as its first optic an ellipsoid to re-focus the beam and a varied line-space plane diffraction grating to disperse the light is the best overall design. This spectrometer could be fed by a small pick-off mirror located just behind the prime focus of the telescope and would clear the light path when not in use. A test of the diffraction efficiency of a low blaze angle grating is undertaken, which is the only technical uncertainty in the spectrometer design.

    Description: Thin metallic foils of antimony and titanium have been investigated in an attempt to develop an EUV filter with a bandpass from 350 to 550 A. A composite filter has been developed composed of antimony sandwiched between two titanium foils. The transmissions of sample composite foils and of pure titanium foils from 130 to 1216 A are presented. The absorption coefficients of anatimony and titanium and the effect of titanium oxide on the transmission are derived. The composite filter has been found to be quite stable and mechanically rugged. Among other uses, the filter shows substantial promise for EUV astronomy.

    Description: The fabrication methods, testing and evaluation techniques, and performance results are presented for the mirrors for the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE). The finest mirror produced to date has a measured half energy width of 8 arcsec at optical wavelengths. With a polished nickel surface, the telescope throughput was 35 percent at 44 A and 60 percent at 256 A. The surface roughness is 20 A rms.

    Description: Thin films of boron and silicon have been developed using electron beam deposition. The transmissions of these filters were measured from soft X-ray wavelengths to the far ultraviolet and at optical wavelengths. The boron filter transmission peaks near 66 A and the silicon filter peaks near 136 A as expected on theoretical grounds, but the extreme ultraviolet bandpass is narrower than expected. The peak transmission of these filters does not change with time, but the width of the silicon filter bandpass is reduced slightly as the filter ages.
