Notes: Abstract The problem of detection and characterization of a flaw in a conducting half-space using an eddy-current coil oriented parallel to the interface is examined. An expression is derived for a first order approximation for the change in complex impedance due to a flaw located within the conducting medium. The overall impedance is a function of the radius and lift-off distance of the test coil and the conductivity of the material. An analytical expression is derived for the change in impedance as a function of the electric fields at the position of the flaw. It is found to be an integral over the volume of the flaw of the electric fields found with and without the flaw being present. The limiting case of a degenerate point flaw may be examined in greater detail by allowing the field in the presence of the flaw to be approximated by the unperturbed field. For flaws small enough that the field does not vary much over its volume, the field may be even further approximated by using just the value of the field at the position of the centroid of the flaw. Plots are shown to illustrate the behavior of the change in impedance as a function of the radial range of the flaw and the depth of the flaw centroid, using previously derived expressions for the fields for the unflawed case.

Notes: Abstract The change in complex impedance between an ideal one-turn circular coil located above and parallel to a conducting half space with respect to a similar isolated coil has been calculated. From this result, a series expansion of the integrand allows the solution to be approximated by terms expressed as complete elliptic integrals. Results have been calculated for the change in impedance as a function of the liftoff distance and the conductivity of the half space for a coil of representative radius.

Notes: Abstract The controllability for switched linear systems with time-delay in controls is first investigated. The whole work contains three parts. This is the third part. The definition and determination of controllability of switched linear systems with multiple time-delay in control functions is mainly investigated. The sufficient and necessary conditions for the one-periodic, multiple-periodic controllability of periodic-type systems and controllability of aperiodic systems are presented, respectively. Finally, the case of distinct delays is discussed, it is shown that the controllability is independent of the size of delays.

Notes: Abstract The controllability for switched linear systems with time-delay in controls is first investigated. The whole work contains three parts. This is the second part. The definition and determination of controllability of switched linear systems with single time-delay in control functions is mainly investigated. The sufficient and necessary conditions for the oneperiodic, multiple-periodic controllability of periodic-type systems and controllability of periodic systems are presented, respectively.

Notes: Considered is the rotation of a robot arm or rod in a horizontal plane about an axis through the arm's fixed end and driven by a motor whose torque is controlled. The model was derived and investigated computationally by Sakawa and co-authors in [7] for the case that the arm is described as a homogeneous Euler beam. The resulting equation of motion is a partial differential equation of the type of a wave equation which is linear with respect to the state, if the control is fixed, and non-linear with respect to the control.Considered is the problem of steering the beam, within a given time interval, from the position of rest for the angle zero into the position of rest under a certain given angle. At first we show that, for every L2-control, there is exactly one (weak) solution of the initial boundary value problem which describes the vibrating system without the end condition. Then we show that the problem of controllability is equivalent to a non-linear moment problem. This, however, is not exactly solvable. Therefore, an iteration method is developed which leads to an approximate solution of sufficient accuracy in two steps. This method is numerically implemented and demonstrated by an example. © 1998 by B. G. Teubner Stuttgart-John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Notes: Abstract The controllability for switched linear system with time-delay in controls was first investigated. The whole work contains three parts. This is the first part, including problem formulation and some preliminaries. Firstly, the mathematical model of switched linear systems with time-delay in control functions was presented. Secondly, the concept of column space, cyclic invariant subspace and generalized cyclic invariant subspace were introduced. And some basic properties, such as separation lemma, were presented. Finally, a basic lemma was given to reveal the relation between the solution set of a centain integral equations and the generalized cyclic invariant subspace. This lemma will play an important role in the determination of controllability. All these definitions and lemmas are necessary research tools for controllability analysis.

Notes: The major difficulty in applying the finite element method to practical problems is the design of a suitable mesh and the assessment of discretization errors. To overcome this difficulty considerable effort has been made in developing adaptive finite element methods, but most of the work has been limited to linear problems. In this paper, fundamental concepts related to error estimates and mesh refinement strategies for non-linear problems are addressed. A simple, but reliable, path-dependent error estimator is proposed. Based on the errors estimated by the present method, a mesh refinement strategy is also suggested. Numerical examples of two ideal plasticity plane stress problems are shown. The non-linear plasticity model is based on an incremental theory using the von Mises yield criterion. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
