    Notes: Abstract A detailed study of the most significant seismic effects that took place in the city of Catania has been performed in order to build up a site catalogue, to assess seismic hazard directly from it and to provide the picture of damage scenarios which happened in the past. In the last 1000 years Catania was destroyed twice (1169 and 1693) and more or less severely damaged twelve times (e.g., 1542, 1818, 1848, etc.). Destruction or severe damage are mainly related to earthquakes occurring in the coastal sector of the Hyblean foreland, while slighter, moderate effects are usually due to earthquakes taking place in the seismogenic sources of the Messina Straits and in the inner Hyblean region. The analysis of the historical reports allowed to delineate the damage scenarios of the most relevant events. In particular, for the 1693 case-history it has also been possible to map the damage distribution with reference to the existing urban settlement of the city. The site catalogue was used for assessing seismic hazard; the obtained estimates show that the probability of occurrence for intensity 7 and 10 exceeds 99.9% for 150 and 500 years, respectively. These values, associated with the high vulnerability caused by the city growth which occurred mainly before the introduction of the seismic code (1981) and without ad-hoc planning policies, implies that the urban system is exposed to high seismic risk.

    Description: Il terremoto del 6 aprile 2009 è sicuramente uno degli eventi per il quale si è avuto il maggior numero di registrazioni; questo ha fatto sì che sono diventate possibili molte analisi, anche molto particolareggiate, e tra queste il confronto tra gli spettri di risposta registrati e quelli previsti dalle recenti Norme Tecniche per le Costruzioni (rilasciate nel 2008 e in vigore in via definitiva dal 1° luglio 2009, NTC08). Questo tipo di confronto è stato sicuramente suggerito dal fatto che in alcune stazioni in area epicentrale si siano superati i valori di PGA previsti dalla mappa di riferimento della pericolosità sismica (MPS04, Gruppo di Lavoro MPS, 2004) per il periodo di ritorno di 475 anni. Viene quindi affrontato dapprima il problema se le registrazioni di un unico terremoto possono essere utilizzate per validare il modello di riferimento e se le eventuali differenze possano pertanto considerarsi significative. Viene poi analizzato il ruolo di alcuni elementi di input della valutazione della pericolosità sismica, in particolar modo le relazioni di attenuazione utilizzate, generalmente considerate poco affidabili per brevi distanze dalla faglia. Viene infine valutata la procedura adottata nella predisposizione di NTC08, che sembra aver privilegiato un migliore adattamento agli spettri a pericolosità uniforme rilasciati da INGV (http://esse1.mi.ingv.it) rispetto a considerazioni di cautela contenute sia negli stessi dati di pericolosità sismica che nella prassi corrente in molti paesi. La serie di confronti tra registrazioni accelerometriche e spettri di progetto previsti dalle NTC08 che è stata condotta suggerisce diverse chiavi di lettura che verranno presentate e discusse.

    Description: A seismic hazard map, with 10% probability of exceedance in 50 years in terms of macroseismic intensity, is proposed for the Italian territory. The input elements used to evaluate the seismic hazard are: the seismogenic zoning ZS9, the earthquake catalogue CPTI04, the historical and statistical completeness. These elements are those used in MPS04 (Gruppo di Lavoro MPS, 2004). Two new intensity attenuation models were used: 1) a set of regional relationships derived from a previous cubic model (Berardi et al., 1993) which has been recalibrated (Gómez Capera, 2006); 2) a relationship obtained with a new approach (Pasolini et al., 2006). The intensity attenuation models were obtained using the macroseismic intensity database, which was used for compiling CPTI04. The computer code adopted to evaluate the seismic hazard, with the elements cited above, is SeisRisk III, which has been modified to be used with macroseismic intensity data, i.e. allowing to consider the normal distribution of the residuals. A logic tree approach has been used to explore some possible alternatives of epistemic character.

    Description: In the frame of the NA-4 module of the European project NERIES, a specific task is devoted to the determination of earthquakes parameters from macroseismic data. On this regard, a new methodology, implemented in the program MEEP, has been developed by Musson et al. (see relevant presentation in this session). Here we present and discuss some tests performed by using the MEEP program in order to contribute to the setting up of the code and to validate the methodology itself. To this purpose, a set of earthquakes occurred in different regions of Europe and with different ranges of magnitude have been selected. In particular, the main aspects investigated here are: •reliability of estimates of epicentre location, magnitude and hypocentral depth compared with instrumental determinations; •comparison with epicentral parameters derived by using other methods based on macroseismic data; •sensitivity of the methodology to number and geographic distribution of available intensity data points (IDPs); •sensitivity to the calibration parameters requested by the program. Results of this analysis suggested some modifications of the program

    Description: The methodology proposed by Bakun and Wentworth (1997, Estimating earthquake location and magnitude from seismic intensity data, Bull. Seism. Soc. Am., 87, 1502-1521; hereinafter B&W) and calibrated with Italian data by Gomez Capera AA, D’Amico V, Meletti C (2008, Calibrating the Bakun-Wentworth’s method for the macroseismic estimation of earthquake parameters in Italy, this conference) was applied to the recently released macroseismic database of Italian earthquakes (DBMI07; http://emidius.mi.ingv.it/DBMI07). The database contains about 83000 intensity data points for 1430 earthquakes. In the time-interval 1900-2006, for the greater part of the earthquakes the instrumental determination (epicentral coordinates and magnitude) is available. Thus, the Bakun and Wentworth method (B&W) was applied to a large set of Italian earthquakes and the results compared with those obtained adopting the Boxer approach (Gasperini, P., Bernardini, F., Valensise, G., Boschi, E.,1999, Defining seismogenic sources from historical earthquake felt reports, Bull. Seismol. Soc. Am. 89, 94-110); epicentral determinations by both methods were then compared with the instrumental parameters.

    Description: This paper describes the probabilistic assessment of seismic hazard (PSHA) of Italy in view of the building codes from 2003 to 2009. A code was issued in 2003 as Prime Minister Ordinance, requiring that a PSHA for updating the seismic zoning would be performed in one year, in terms of horizontal peak ground acceleration (PGA) with 10% probability of exceedance in 50 years, on hard ground. For the first time in Italy a working group, established by Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV), adopted a logic-tree approach to model the epistemic uncertainty in: the completeness of the earthquake catalog, the assessment of the seismicity rates and Mmax, and the ground motion prediction equations. The seismic hazard has been computed over a grid of more than 16,000 points for the median value (50th percentile), 84th and 16th percentiles of the 16 branches of the logic tree. Using the same input model, PGA values and spectral accelerations for 10 spectral periods were computed for 9 different probabilities of exceedance in 50 years. This wealth of data made it possible to base the design spectra of a new building code on point hazard data instead of being related to just four zones. The 2009, Mw 6.3 L’Aquila earthquake has led many to attempt to test the reliability of this study. In this paper we analyze suggestions coming from that event and conclude that significant changes to the design spectra are not be recommended based just on evidence from the L’Aquila earthquake.

    Description: The assessment of the completeness of historical earthquake data (such as, for instance, parametric earthquake catalogues) has usually been approached in seismology - and mainly in Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Assessment(PSHA) - by means of statistical procedures. Such procedures look «inside» the data set under investigation and compare it to seismicity models, which often require more or less explicitly that seismicity is stationary. They usually end up determining times (Ti), from which on the data set is considered as complete above a given magnitude (Mi); the part of the data set before Ti is considered as incomplete and, for that reason, not suitable for statistical analysis. As a consequence, significant portions of historical data sets are not used for PSHA. Dealing with historical data sets - which are incomplete by nature, although this does not mean that they are of low value - it seems more appropriate to estimate «how much incomplete» the data sets can be and to use them together with such estimates. In other words, it seems more appropriate to assess the completeness looking «outside » the data sets; that is, investigating the way historical records have been produced, preserved and retrieved. This paper presents the results of investigation carried out in Italy, according to historical methods. First, the completeness of eighteen site seismic histories has been investigated; then, from those results, the completeness of areal portions of the catalogue has been assessed and compared with similar results obtained by statistical methods. Finally, the impact of these results on PSHA is described.
