    Notes: A simple method of preparing thin uniform films of high polymers has been examined for growing single crystals from solution. Single crystals of polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutene-1, polyacrylonitrile, and cellulose triacetate have been obtained by this method. Different stages of growth reveal different growth features that are also obtained from solutions of these polymers by changing temperature and concentration.

    Notes: The decay kinetics of the chain allyl free radical has been studied in the following morphological forms of polyethylene (PE): Marlex bulk film, hydrogenated PE, and extended-chain PE. Coupled with previous work on single-crystalline PE it can be seen that the decay rate is greater the more amorphous the sample. In the Marlex bulk film and hydrogenated PE the decay can be interpreted in terms of a simultaneous fast and slow decay process by means of our Q-function equation, but with rising temperature the decay approximates a single rate process. With extended-chain PE the allyl decay rate does not become appreciable until the melting range is approached. The fraction of allyl radicals decaying by the slow process is 2 to 10 times greater than the fraction of fast decaying radicals. The ratio of the fast decay rate constant to that of the slow rate constant is greater for the bulk Marlex film than for the hydrogenated PE. All ratios decrease with rising temperature. For times up to about 150 min the allyl decay in the extended-chain PE accurately follows a single second-order decay law with a time-independent diffusion controlled reaction rate constant.

    Notes: Free-radical copolymerization of methyl acrylate (MA) with N-p-chlorophenylmaleimide (NPCMI) and N-p-bromophenylmaleimide (NPBMI) initiated by AIBN in cyclohexanone solution at 75°C was studied. The copolymer composition has been determined from the nitrogen content and NMR spectra of the copolymers. The reactivity ratios have been calculated by ML, FR, KT, and JJ methods. Q and e values of NPCMI and NPBMI have also been calculated by the Alfrey-Price Q-e scheme.

    Notes: Thermal behavior of unfractionated poly(2-methoxy)-Cyanurate, PMCBC- film has been reported. The degradation of the polymer involved two steps. The glass transition temperature, Tg, from DSC and DMA studies is ∼ 200°C. TMA study shows that the glass-rubber transition region is in the range of 157 to 199°C. The thermal stability of PMCBC has been found to be superior to commercially available polymers.

    Notes: Cellulose acetate butyrate has been studied in regard to its hydrodynamic properties in several solvents. The polymer was fractionated by precipitation, and the molecular weight distribution of the polymer fractions was determined by gel permeation chromatography. The number-average molecular weight was estimated by osmometry. The Mark-Houwink-Kuhn-Sakurada relations between viscosity and molecular weights were established, and the unperturbed dimensions of the polymer chains were evaluated. In light of these data, current theories of polymer solutions are discussed. A new method of estimating unperturbed dimensions is proposed for semiflexible linear polymers.

    Notes: In this paper the synthesis and properties of resacetophenone oxime-formaldehyde resin are described. The number-average molecular weights of the resin determined by vapor-pressure osmometry and nonaqueous conductometric titration are 2200 ± 10% and 2500 g/mol, respectively. Cu(II), Ni(II), and Co(II) chelates of the resin were prepared. Elemental analysis of the chelates indicates a metal to ligand ratio of 1:2. The diffuse reflectance spectra and magnetic moments of Ni(II) and Co(II) chelates show tetrahedral structure, whereas Cu(II) chelate shows a square planar structure. Infrared spectral studies show that the metals are coordinated through the nitrogen of the oximino group and oxygen of the phenolic group. The presence of methylene bridges is also indicated by IR spectral studies. The thermal behavior of the resin and its metal chelates are also discussed.

    Notes: Thermally stable and semiconducting poly-Schiff bases are synthesized by condensing 4,4′-diacetyl diphenyl ether with o-, m-, and p-phenylene diamines, benzidine, and ethylene diamine under different experimental conditions. These bases are insoluble in common organic solvents. They are characterized by infrared (IR) and viscosity measurements, thermal analysis, and the study of electricel properties at various temperatures. Variation of electrical conductivity σ with temperature followed the empirical relation σ = σ0e-E*/kT.

    Description: Somatostatin and dopamine are two major neurotransmitter systems that share a number of structural and functional characteristics. Somatostatin receptors and dopamine receptors are colocalized in neuronal subgroups, and somatostatin is involved in modulating dopamine-mediated control of motor activity. However, the molecular basis for such interaction between the two systems is unclear. Here, we show that dopamine receptor D2R and somatostatin receptor SSTR5 interact physically through hetero-oligomerization to create a novel receptor with enhanced functional activity. Our results provide evidence that receptors from different G protein (heterotrimeric guanine nucleotide binding protein)-coupled receptor families interact through oligomerization.     Notes: Samples of n-hexatriacontane irradiated in the crystalline and molten states were compared as regards the GPC chromatograms of the partially crosslinked products. From differences in the elution volumes it could be inferred that there is a greater trend for random linking along the chain in the sample irradiated in the melt as opposed to preference for end-type linking in the samples irradiated as crystals. In the course of this work the applicability of the GPC technique for detecting short (methyl) branches and for distinguishing between the position of these branches along the chain has also become apparent.
