    Description: On 2 January 2004 during its historic flight to return cometary dust samples to earth, the STARDUST spacecraft flew within the coma of comet Wild 2 and also took 72 images where the surface was resolved during the flyby. A combination of long and short exposures was used to observe the jets and the surface. Comet Surface: The images revealed a planetary body, one not having a significant atmosphere, quite different from any other such body seen from other spacecraft. Surface depressions, potentially a combination of craters and vents, were not bowl-shaped but typically had steep walls and flattened floors. One depression considered to be a vent, the source of a jet, had a depth to diameter ratio of approx.0.4, with near vertical walls. Jets: At least 10 to possibly 20 jets were active during the flyby. Some were traced back to the surface where they seem to originate from the near vertical walls of depressions (vents) that were facing the sun, having the highest solar insolation.

    Description: Seventy-two images of the S-class asteroid 5535 Annefrank, acquired on 2 November 2002 at target ranges of 11,415??8.5 km, were transmitted to Earth as a part of an engineering readiness test of the Stardust mission. Forty-four of these were used to create a phase curve extending to 134, the largest angle yet achieved for any S-class asteroid. Flux fell by more than six magnitudes between the extrapolated 0 and 134. A maximum illuminated cross section of 16 km2 was seen at a phase angle of 47.2. Assuming a camera efficiency of 75%, a broadband (470?? nm) geometric albedo of 0.24 was derived for Annefrank.

    Description: SPICE is an information system providing space scientists ready access to a wide assortment of space geometry useful in planning science observations and analyzing the instrument data returned therefrom. The system includes software used to compute many derived parameters such as altitude, LAT/LON and lighting angles, and software able to find when user-specified geometric conditions are obtained. While not a formal standard, it has achieved widespread use in the worldwide planetary science community
