Beschreibung: The difficulties connected with conventional maps of Phobos and Deimos are largely overcome by producing maps in digital forms, i.e., by projecting Viking Orbiter images onto a global topographic model made from collections of radii derived by photogrammetry. The resulting digital mosaics are then formatted as arrays of body-centered latitudes, longitudes, radii, and brightness values of Viking Orbiter images. The Phobos mapping described was done with Viking Orbiter data. Significant new coverage was obtained by the Soviet Phobos mission. The mapping of Deimos is in progress, using the techniques developed for Phobos.

Beschreibung: Viking Orbiter-1 (VO-1) made a series of close flybys of the Martian satellite Phobos in February and May 1977. A description is presented of the results obtained during the flybys in February. The flyby geometries for the encounter period in February are shown in a graph. The trajectory design gave flybys on the illuminated side of Phobos within 80 to 300 km during the entire encounter period. The primary encounter observations of Phobos included visual and infrared imaging as well as radio tracking of VO-1 while it was under the gravitational influence of Phobos. Visual imaging was obtained from two narrow-angle television cameras. Infrared observations were obtained from an infrared thermal mapper. Radio data included S- and X-band Doppler and ranging data to VO-1 with a 10-second Doppler count. Assuming for Phobos a volume of 500 + or - 900 cu km, a mean density of 1.9 + or - 0.6 g/cu cm is obtained for it on the basis of the processed data.

Beschreibung: Images of Phobos and Deimos acquired by the Viking orbiter television system have been used to determine the photometric functions of the Martian moons. Data covering wavelengths from 445 nm to 593 nm and solar phase angles between 0.5 deg and 122 deg were used. Normal reflectances of 0.066 + or - 0.006 for Phobos and 0.069 + or - 0.006 for Deimos were determined. No variations in either photometric function or average normal albedo were observed over the wavelength range studied. The photometric functions demonstrate that the surface of Phobos and Deimos are intricate in texture brightness surges near opposition that are more pronounced than that of the moon.

Beschreibung: One fireball was photographed during two encounters with Jupiter. Its total luminosity was 120,000 0 mag s (at standard range 100 km). If the luminous efficiency proposed by Cook et al. (1981) for slip flow of a meteoroid in its own vapors is employed, an estimated mass of 11 kg is obtained. A rough absolute magnitude is -12.5. If it is noted that the search was conducted for a total of 223 s during two exposures, a number density near Jupiter of 10 to the -28th/cu cm is estimated for masses of meteoroids of 3 kg and greater. This value is about a factor of six smaller than a rough upper limit reached from an extrapolation from terrestrial observations of meteors and comets.

Beschreibung: The shape and orbital characteristics of Phobos, the larger and innermost of Mars' two irregular moons, are discussed and illustrated. Also presented are the high resolution pictures of Phobos that were obtained during the close flybys of Viking Orbiters 1 and 2. The viewing geometry is also given for each picture.

Beschreibung: Remote sensing observations of the Jovian atmosphere at wavelengths ranging from UV to the IR are affected by the presence of haze layers above the visible clouds. These layers are difficult to detect as they generally contain submicron particles. In the present paper, a sequence of Voyager images of high-latitude haze, which extends through the Jovian stratosphere into the mesosphere is presented and discussed.

Beschreibung: A new data type for planetary geodetic control using natural satellite imaging is presented. Spacecraft images of natural satellites against the planet give a direct tie between inertial space and surface features surrounding the satellite image. This technique is expected to offer a factor of 3-10 improvement in accuracy over present geodetic reduction for Mars. A specific example using Viking imaging of Phobos against Mars is given.

Beschreibung: Results of processing seven mutual occultation lightcurves are presented. The lightcurves were obtained using the 60-in. telescope (152 cm) at Mt. Wilson to observe six J1 occulting J2 events and one J3 occulting J2 event. Using a uniformly illuminated disk model, local satellite Jovicentric longitude corrections of 675 plus or minus 150 km, 275 plus or minus 240 km, and 1175 plus or minus 350 km for J1, J2, and J3, respectively, were determined. These corrections enabled the event midpoint times to be computed to within 5 sec of the observed midpoint times for all seven events. These longitude corrections have been verified by Pioneer 10 and recent (1973 and 1974) conventional Jovian eclipse observations. A relative J1:J2 out-of-plane error of less than a few hundred kilometers has been indicated; however, it appears that the relative J3:J2 out-of-plane error is larger than 600 km. Deficiencies in both the uniformly illuminated disk model and Sampson's theory of the Galilean satellite motions for the reduction of mutual event data are described.

Beschreibung: Initial analysis of the Mariner 9 high resolution pictures of Phobos surface features has been completed. A control network of 38 landmarks has been established and used to determine the physical size, shape, orientation, libration, and topography properties of Phobos. The results verified the synchronous rotation of Phobos and revealed a libration of approximately 5 deg in the orbit plane of Phobos. A preliminary map of Phobos, based on the control network analysis, is given.

Beschreibung: Simple trigonometric expressions are derived for the right ascensions and declinations of the spin axes of Phobos and Deimos as well as for their prime meridians. Simple expressions are possible since both satellites are in synchronous rotation about Mars and since the orbits of both satellites are accurately modeled as precessing ellipses. Spin axis expressions reflect the offset and precession of the orbit pole about the Laplacian pole. Prime meridian expressions include orbital mean motion, long-period solar perturbations, secular acceleration, and short-period, tidally induced forced libration. These simple expressions agree with rigorous expressions to + or - 0.2 deg.
