Notes: Allyl methacrylate has been polymerized by free-radical methods and found to yield a soluble polymer in carbon tetrachloride, dioxane, and diallyl ether solutions. The overall rate equation in diallyl ether is Rp = k[ln]0.7[M]1.6. It is suggested that propagation and cyclization reactions proceed only via addition to the methacrylyl groups of the monomer. Some degradative chain transfer occurs with the allyl groups, and it is considered that the solvents may ensure the production of soluble polymers by reactions in which allyl-radical side chains are terminated without crosslinking.

Notes: The effect of pressures up to 4000 atm on the free-radical cyclopolymerization of acrylic anhydride in solution has been investigated. Both the molecular weight and degre of cyclization of the polymer are increased by pressure. The rate of polymerization at first decreases with increasing pressure, but above 2500 atm a normal acceleration occurs.

Description: The feasibility of obtaining nondestructively a cross-sectional display of very dense heterogeneous rocky specimens, whether lunar, terrestrial or meteoritic, by using a fourth generation computed tomographic (CT) scanner, with modifications to the software only, is discussed. A description of the scanner, and of the experimental and analytical procedures is given. Using this technique, the interior of heterogeneous materials such as Allende can be probed nondestructively. The regions of material with high and low atomic numbers are displayed quickly; the object can then be cut to obtain for analysis just the areas of interest. A comparison of this technique with conventional industrial and medical techniques is made in terms of image resolution and density distribution display precision.

Description: During the Ulysses flyby of Jupiter in February 1992, the spacecraft traversed the Jovian magnetosheath for a few hours during the inbound pass and for aa few days during the outbound pass. Burstlike electomagnetic waves at frequencies of approximately 0.1-0.4 of the local electron cyclotron frequency have been observed by the Unified Radio and Plasma Wave (URAP) experiement. The waves were more often observed in the regions which were probably the outer or the middle magnetosheath, especially near the bow shock, and rarely seen in the magnetosphere/magnetosheath boundary layer. The propagation angles of the waves are estimated by comparing the measurements of the wave electric and magnetic fields in the spacecraft spin plane with the corresponding values calculated using the cold plasma dispersion relation under local field and plasma conditions. It is found that the waves propagate obliquely with wave angles between approximately 30 deg and 50 deg. These waves are likely to be the whistler mode waves which are excited by suprathermal electrons with a few hundred eV and a slight anisotropy (T(sub perp)/T(sub parallel) approximately 1.1-1.5). They are probably similar in nature to the lion roars observed in the Earth's magnetosheath. Signature of coupling between the mirror and the whistler mode have also been observed. The plasma conditions which favor the excitation of the whistler mode instability during the wave events exists as observed by the plasma experiement of Ulysses.

Notes: Dielectric relaxation data have been obtained for two ethylene-methacrylic acid copolymers (containing about 4 mole-% methacrylic acid units and about 8 mole-% methacrylic acid units, respectively) and the lithium, sodium, and calcium salts prepared by partial neutralization of the polyacids. The frequency range employed was from 50 Hz to 10 kHz and the temperature range was from -130°C to 100°C. Attention is focused on three dielectric loss regions labeled β, β and α in order of increasing temperature. The β′ process (-10°C at 100 Hz in the salts only) correlates with a mechanical loss process previously reported and is attributed to microbrownian motion taking place in an amorphous hydrocarbon phase. The β′ process (20°C at 100 Hz) has also been observed mechanically and is attributed to the same mechanism as the β process. The higher temperature of this relaxation compared to the β relaxation is attributed to the presence of acid groups which form crosslinks composed of interchain hydrogen bonds. The α process (〉50°C at 100 Hz in the salts only) correlates with dielectric and NMR data previously reported for a sodium salt and is assigned to motions within ionic domains formed by the clustering of salt groups.

Notes: The structure of the polycarbonate chain has been analyzed from the point of view of the spatial configurations it may assume. The carbonate group is certainly planar, and the trans, trans configuration probably is strongly preferred. Rotations about the aryloxygen bonds are subject to symmetric, twofold potentials. It follows that the molecule can be treated as a freely rotating chain consisting of a succession of virtual bonds 7.0 Å in length, joined at angles of ca. 112°. Calculations carried out on this basis yield 〈r2〉0/M = 0.85 Å2/g-mole wt for the unperturbed random coil, in excellent agreement with the experimental results of Berry, Nomura, and Mayhan. The effect of occurrence of some of the carbonate groups in cis, trans configurations is investigated using more elaborate methods.

Notes: The length of the span of the terephthaloyl residue in poly(ethylene terephthalate) guarantees independence of the conformations of successive repeating units of the chain. Interactions within units of the chain are amenable to interpretation by comparisons with related polymers; cis and trans conformations of the terephthaloyl residue are given equal weighting. The mean-square dimension ratio (〈r2〉0/M)∞ estimated on this basis is in substantial accord with the value deduced from experiments.

Notes: The statistical mechanical treatment of polymeric chains in terms of the largest eigenvalue of the product of statistical weight matrices for the rotational interactions of skeletal bonds of the repeat unit becomes excessively complicated if the repeat unit spans more than three or four skeletal bonds. Moreover, such treatment is necessarily limited to chains in which the number of repeat units is indefinitely large. Newer methods are readily applicable to chains of any degree of polymerization comprising repeat units of any realizable length. If interdependence of neighboring bond rotations is confined to bond pairs within a given unit, rotations about a pair of bonds belonging to neighboring units being mutually independent, further simplifications may be introduced without sacrifice of rigor. Polyamides, in which rotation about bonds on opposite sides of the amide group are independent, are polymers of this type. Adherence of the amide group to the planar trans conformation favors a more extended configuration of the chain, but this effect is dominated by the smaller steric repulsions affecting rotations about bonds which are first, second, and third neighbors of the amide group. It is for this reason that the characteristic ratio 〈r2〉0〉/nl2 for poly(hexamethylene adipamide), ca. 6.0 according to experimental results of Saunders, is less than the value, 8.0, for polymethylene at 25°C. The characteristic ratios and molecular dipole moments are computed as functions of the degree of polymerization. The poly(εaminocaproamide) chain also is treated.

Notes: It is reported that mats formed by the sedimentation of single crystals of methyl- and ethyl-branched polyethylene exhibit strength and ductility comparable with that of melt-crystallized films. In fact, in the case of methyl-branched polymers, extensions of up to 50× were obtained on cold drawing. Observations on separate crystals suggest that this extension is due to the pulling out of individual lamellae. In view of the magnitude of the extension, this implies unfolding of the molecules. That considerable coherence can be obtained without original molecular ties between crystals is of significance as regards the molecular interpretation of the strength and ductility of crystalline polymers.
