  • LASERS AND MASERS  (7)
  • 1
    Publication Date: 2019-06-27
Description: A mode-locked Nd:YAG laser capable of generating pulses substantially shorter than the present limit of 30-50 ps, while retaining the stability of active mode locking, would be a useful development. This study presents a simplified theoretical analysis and a preliminary experimental verification of the use of an optical Kerr cell as a passive lossless pulse compressor inside a Q-switched and actively mode-locked YAG laser. The theoretical model indicates possible compression to as short as about 5 ps in a typical low-power Nd:YAG laser. The preliminary experimental results show substantial pulse compression via the predicted mechanism, though still not below about 30 ps. The technique appears capable, however, of pulse compression to substantially shorter values without the instabilities, statistical fluctuations, or energy losses associated with saturable-absorber mode locking.

Description: The paper presents analytical and computer studies of the CW mode-locked and intracavity frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser which provide new insight into the operation, including the detuning behavior, of this type of laser. Computer solutions show that the steady-state pulse shape for this laser is much closer to a truncated cosine than to a Gaussian; there is little spectral broadening for on-resonance operation; and the chirp is negligible. This leads to a simplified analytical model carried out entirely in the time domain, with atomic linewidth effects ignored. Simple analytical results for on-resonance pulse shape, pulse width, signal intensity, and harmonic conversion efficiency in terms of basic laser parameters are derived from this model. A simplified physical description of the detuning behavior is also developed. Agreement is found with experimental studies showing that the pulsewidth decreases as the modulation frequency is detuned off resonance; the harmonic power output initially increases and then decreases; and the pulse shape develops a sharp-edged asymmetry of opposite sense for opposite signs of detuning.

Description: The generation of tunable visible, infrared, and ultraviolet light is examined, along with the control of this light by means of novel mode-locking and modulation techniques. Transient mode-locking of the Nd:YAG laser and generation of short tunable pulses in the visible and the alkali metal inert gas excimer laser systems were investigated. Techniques for frequency conversion of high power and high energy laser radiation are discussed, along with high average power blue and UV laser light sources.

Description: The goal of this grant was to study lasers, laser devices, and uses of lasers for investigating physical phenomena are studied. The active projects included the development of a tunable, narrowband XUV light source and its application to the spectroscopy of core excited atomic states, and the development of a technique for picosecond time resolution spectroscopy of fast photophysical processes.

Description: The most important recent advance with respect to mode locking has been the development of 'colliding-pulse' mode locking. An important extension to this method is reported. According to this extension, the colliding pulse function is obtained by making use of an 'antiresonant ring' laser cavity. The new concept has been applied to a flash-pumped passively mode-locked Nd:YAG laser in a number of experiments. Attention is given to mode locking of a self-pumped phase conjugate laser, picosecond photoacoustic experiments, and picosecond pulses on semiconductor surfaces.

Description: Various applications of an antiresonant ring, consisting of a beam splitter and a number of optical reflectors, are described. With a beam splitter having a transmission coefficient and a reflection coefficient, an optical beam incident on the beam splitter along a first axis is split into two components which circulate around the ring in opposite directions. They are recombined to reflect back the beam along the first axis, with none of the beam power being directed along a second axis. The ring can be part of the cavity of two otherwise independent lasers, with two separate laser mediums external to the ring, or with a multi-wavelength laser medium in the ring. The ring together with a second-harmonic generation crystal and a dispersive phase shifter in the ring can generate the second harmonic of an optical beam.
