Beschreibung: Cycling of a closed-cycle refrigerator produces temperature oscillations at the cold-tip which may be 0.5 K peak-to-peak. An active diode heater is described which compensates for the varying temperature and reduces the oscillations at the sample to about 0.003 K peak-to-peak at 9.5 K.

Beschreibung: Closed-cycle helium refrigerators are widely used as coolers for semiconductor diode lasers. These refrigerators pose several difficulties including temperature oscillations due to varying refrigerator capacity during the Solvay cycle, and impact shocks delivered to the diode in the cycle's expansion phase. A shock isolator has been designed to isolate diode lasers from such impact shocks. Slow diode current scans have been made before installation of the shock isolator, with the isolator but no thermal damper, and with both devices. With the isolator and no damper, the diode output frequency oscillated at the refrigerator cycle rate, deviating by plus or minus 40 MHz. Using the isolator and the damper no frequency fluctuation was detected.

Beschreibung: The paper deals with an approach which can improve the accuracy of etalon calibration of tunable diode-laser (TDL) spectra in the IR and extend absolute calibration among several isolated modes. Two etalons placed in the laser beam produce a combined fringe pattern that, with the aid of a monochromator mode selector, can be used to establish the number of fringes between any two spectral points separated by a large frequency interval. This technique has been applied to several similar cases for calibration of isolated modes or verification of the identity of lines of known frequency.

Beschreibung: A diode laser based IR heterodyne spectrometer for laboratory and field use was developed for high efficiency operation between 7.5 and 8.5 microns. The local oscillator is a PbSSe tunable diode laser kept continuously at operating temperatures of 12-60 K using a closed cycle cooler. The laser output frequency is controlled and stabilized using a high precision diode current supply, constant temperature controller, and a shock isolator mounted between the refrigerator cold tip and the diode mount. Single laser modes are selected by a grating placed in the local oscillator beam. The system employs reflecting optics throughout to minimize losses from internal reflection and absorption, and to eliminate chromatic effects. Spectral analysis of the diode laser output between 0 and 1 GHz reveals excess noise at many diode current settings, which limits the infrared spectral regions over which useful heterodyne operation can be achieved. System performance has been studied by making heterodyne measurements of etalon fringes and several Freon 13 (CF3Cl) absorption lines against a laboratory blackbody source. Preliminary field tests have also been performed using the Sun as a source.

Beschreibung: Laboratory spectra of CCL2F2 in the 10.8 micron region was recorded, using a tuneable diode laser spectrometer. Effects of air-broadening at pressures up to 48 Torr show that spectral structure should be exhibited under high resolution at altitudes as low as 19 Km. The single line, pressure-broadening coefficient for CCL2F2 was estimated to be 8 MHz/Torr FWHM.

Beschreibung: A device developed to isolate the diode laser from impact shocks delivered during the expansion phase of the Solvay cycle of a helium refrigerator is briefly described. The device uses intermediate cold stations in the stand-off, which permit the stand-off to be short and rigid while minimizing the thermal load at the diode mount.

Beschreibung: Tunable, CW, FIR radiation has been generated by nonlinear mixing of radiation from two CO2 lasers in a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) diode. The FIR difference-frequency power was radiated from the MIM diode antenna to a calibrated InSb bolometer. FIR power of 200 nW was generated by 250 mW from each of the CO2 lasers. Using the combination of lines from a waveguide CO2 laser, with its larger tuning range, with lines from CO2, N2O, and CO2-isotope lasers promises complete coverage of the entire FIR band with stepwise-tunable CW radiation.

Beschreibung: High-accuracy absorption spectroscopy of CH3OH in the far infrared is discussed. In addition to 22 transitions in the ground state, the frequency of the (n, tau, J, K), (0, 1, 16, 8) to (0, 2, 15, 7) transition in the nu5 excited vibrational level, which is responsible for the laser emission at 119 microns, was measured. The measured frequency is 2,522,782.57(10) MHz at zero pressure, with a pressure shift of 6.1(32) kHz/Pa (0.805/420/ MHz/torr). An accurate remeasurement of the laser emission frequency has also been performed, and the results are in good agreement.

Beschreibung: The first experimental observations of sub-Doppler linewidths in a cell made using tunable far-infrared radiation are reported. A double-resonance scheme has been used, combining CO2-laser infrared radiation with tunable far-infrared radiation to observe a sub-Doppler line shape in an excited vibrational state of CH3OH.
