    Description: This paper describes a microsatellite spacecraft with supporting mission profile and architecture, designed to enable preliminary in-situ characterization of a significant number of Near Earth Objects (NEOs) at reasonably low cost. The spacecraft will be referred to as the NEO-Scout. NEO-Scout spacecraft are to be placed in Geosynchronous Equatorial Orbit (GEO), cis-lunar space, or on earth escape trajectories as secondary payloads on launch vehicles headed for GEO or beyond, and will begin their mission after deployment from the launcher. A distinguishing key feature of the NEO-Scout system is to design the spacecraft and mission timeline so as to enable rendezvous with and landing on the target NEO during NEO close approach (〈0.3 AU) to the Earth-Moon system using low-thrust/high-impulse propulsion systems. Mission durations are on the order 100 to 400 days. Mission feasibility and preliminary design analysis are presented, along with detailed trajectory calculations.

    Description / Table of Contents: A Contribution to the Bisnorcaradiene Problem. Synthesis, Properties, and Structural Parameters of Bicyclo[5.4.0]undecapentaene - the Valence Isomer of BisnorcaradieneThe problem of the existence of bisnorcaradiene (2) is discussed. MINDO/3 calculations show that the equilibrium of 2 (bearing substituents) with its valence isomers 5 and 21 is shifted towards 5 and 21 with about 11 kcal/mol. The photolysis of the spironorcaradiene/spirotropylidene equilibrium mixtures (7 ⇄ 8) followed by NMR-spectroscopy allowed the detection of the valence isomer 5. Irradiations of (7 ⇄ 8) on a preparative scale gave mixtures of hydrocarbons 5, 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20. In the case of the dibenzo derivative, the bicyclo[5.4.0]undecapentaene 5e could be isolated. NMR and CMR spectra as well as an X-ray analysis clearly established the structure to be 5e. Even at low temperature the bisnorcaradiene (2) could not be detected by NMR spectroscopy. Thermolysis of 5a-e giving 16 and 17 can be explained via an equilibrium 5 ⇄ 2 ⇄ 21, i.e. a bisnorcaradiene must be involved as an unstable intermediate. The photorearrangement of (7 ⇄ 8) producing 5 (⇄ 2 ⇄ 21) has most probably to be regarded as a di-π-methane rearrangement.
    Notes: Das Problem der Existenz des Bisnorcaradiens (2) wird diskutiert. MINDO/3-Rechnungen zeigen, daß das Gleichgewicht von 2 (im Falle von Substituenten) mit seinen beiden Valenzisomeren 5 und 21 mit ca. 11 kcal/mol zugunsten von 5 bzw. 21 verschoben sein sollte. Bei der NMR-spektroskopisch kontrollierten Photolyse der Spironorcaradien/Spirotropyliden-Gleichgewichtsgemische (7 ⇄ 8) kann bei tiefen Temperaturen das Valenzisomer 5 identifiziert werden. Belichtungen von (7 ⇄ 8) im präparativen Maßstab ergeben Gemische der Kohlenwasserstoffe 5, 16, 17, 18, 19 und 20. Lediglich im Fall des Dibenzo-Derivates konnte das Bicyclo[5.4.0]undecapentaen 5e in Substanz isoliert werden. NMR- und CMR-Spektren sowie insbesondere eine Röntgenstrukturanalyse bestätigen eindeutig die Struktur von 5e. NMR-spektroskopisch konnte auch bei tiefen Temperaturen das Bisnorcaradien (2) nicht nachgewiesen werden. - Die Thermolyse von 5a-e zu 16 bzw. 17 kann über ein Gleichgewicht 5 ⇄ 2 ⇄ 21 erklärt werden, d.h. das Bisnorcaradien muß dabei als kurzlebige Zwischenstufe auftreten. Die Photoumlagerung von (7 ⇄ 8) zu 5 (⇄ 2 ⇄ 21) dürfte mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit als eine Di-π-methan-Umlagerung anzusehen sein.
