Notes: Volume flow of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) (M̄n = 43,000 and Tg = 384) has been measured in an Instron Capillary Rheometer. Elastic modulus of the longitudinal wave, longitudinal volume viscosity, initial longitudinal volume viscosity, and retardation times are described at temperatures above Tg (418-483K) and compression rates of about 1.00-200.00 × 105 s-1. An initial increase followed by a decrease in longitudinal volume viscosity has been observed as the compression rate increases and the volume deformation decreases, this last behavior being at the lowest values of the compression rate (6.0 and 30.0 × 10-5 s-1) a typical nonequilibrium one. ηL also increases with increasing temperature (Tg decreases 0.18°C/MPa), and volume flow activation energy decreases as the volume deformation increases.

Notes: A butyl acrylate monomer with a small amount of photosensitizer was diffused into a slightly crosslinked polystyrene matrix. After a certain swelling time, the diffusion gradient was either fixed (by rapid photopolymerization in situ) to form a gradient polymer or changed to form an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN), once thermodynamic equilibrium was achieved. Chemical compositions were determined by FTIR. Mechanical and rheological measurements were performed using a universal testing machine and dynamic rheometer, respectively. Impact properties were evaluated with a Falling Dart Impact Tester. Compared to the IPN materials, the gradient polymers exhibit higher moduli, considerable strain, and similar impact resistance. They are also able to retain plastic properties at higher temperatures. Differences in chemical structure of equivalent layers for gradient and IPN polymers yield such differences in properties. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: In this work a few observations are made about some microstructural aspects from HDPE and LDPE homopolymers and their blends as virgin materials and also from urban plastic wastes. Micrographs were taken by SEM. Micrographs corresponding to the fracture surface from specimens tested in an impact test clearly show different microstructural features due to polymer which is more than 50%. Parts were injection molded. On the other hand, a discussion is given about crystallization behavior of those materials obtained by DSC. For all blends the same results have been found, i.e., two peaks owing to each of the two polymers which are present in the blends.
