Notes: Abstract Overwintering Colorado potato beetles (Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say)) were concentrated primarily within woody borders, and mortality was lower in borders than in potato fields. After overwintering, only 15–44% of live beetles were in the potato fields. In experiments with small plots, colonization of fields from woody borders was reduced ∼60% by a trap crop, either treated with adulticide or with beetles collected daily. Such trap crops, or simply pitfall traps to prevent colonization from woody borders, could significantly reduce early-season adult numbers and subsequent larval populations. However, success is dependent on the local densities of overwintered beetles, and the prevalence of arrestment behavior in the case of trap crops.

Notes: The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of using a fluorocarbon liquid in a liquid-liquid contacting device for extracorporeal blood oxygenation. Extraction experiments were carried out wherein blood was gently contacted with FC-43 (a fluorinated tributyl amine) for up to 48 hr. The fluorocarbon caused no significant change in red cell volume, white cell count, plasma hemoglobin, platelet count, plasma fibrinogen, or the relative amounts of thirteen different plasma proteins. To determine toxicity, FC-43 slugs and emulsions were injected intravenously and intraaortically into dogs. No chemical toxicity has been found, but the fluorocarbon is intolerable above about 1.7 mg/kg because it retards the flow of blood through pulmonary capillaries. FC-43 was used for several in vivo tests of a vertical cylindrical blood oxygenator. The hemolysis caused by the falling film of fluorocarbon on the inner Teflon wall of the cylinder was considerably less than that caused by direct contact between blood and Teflon, suggesting that the blood-fluorocarbon interface is quite atraumatic. All these results indicate that this fluorocarbon liquid holds considerable promise for use in a liquid-liquid blood oxygenator.

Notes: Polyacetylene, (CH)x, has been doped with trimethyloxonium hexachloroantimonate, (CH3)3O+SbCl6-(1), in dichloromethane and acetonitrile. The maximally doped (CH)x films have moderate conductivities [σRT(CH2Cl2) = 10, σRT(CH3CN) = 0.7 Ω-1 cm-1]. Reactions between 1 and (CH)x CH2Cl2 or CH3CN were followed in situ by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and x-band electron spin resonance spectroscopy. It was found that the reactions in the two solvents are different. In dichloromethane the dopant is SbCl5, which forms from the decomposition of 1, and doping proceeds by electron removal from (CH)x chains. Based on the ESR signal loss, an estimate can be made of the diffusion rate of SbCl5, into the (CH)x fibrils in CH2Cl2; it is found to be ca. 10-17 cm2/s. In acetonitrile the dopant appears to be either CH3CNCH3+, H+, CH3+, or a combination of one or more of these dopants. It is postulated that the CH3CNCH3+, CH+3, and/or H+ dopant covalently binds to the (CH)x chain. X-ray photoelectron spectra show that films doped with excess 1 in both solvents have approximately one SbCl6- per 33 CH units.
