    Description: High resolution film was used to measure solar ultraviolet irradiation at a wavelength of 254 nanometers between energy levels of 3 x 10 to the minus 7 power and 130 x 10 to the minus 7 power joules (3 and 130 ergs). The results imply that the film recorded exposure to energy levels from 2.5 to 13 times the expected values. These high values are being evaluated for the influences of other factors that could affect the recorded values.

    Description: A hemispherical open resonator has previously been used to make relative comparisons of the surface resistivity of metallic thin-film samples in the submillimeter wavelength region. This resonator is fed from a far-infrared laser via a small coupling hole in the center of the concave spherical mirror. The experimental arrangement, while desirable as a coupling geometry for monitoring weak emissions from the cavity, can lead to the introduction of spurious modes into the cavity. Sources of these modes are identified, and a simple alteration of the experimental apparatus to eliminate such modes is suggested.

    Description: A wave sensor, consisting of parallel, evenly spaced capacitance wires, whose output is the sum of the water surface deflections at the wires, has been built and tested in a wave tank. The probe output simulates Bragg scattering of electromagnetic waves from a water surface with waves; it can be used to simulate electromagnetic probing of the sea surface by radar. The study establishes that the wave probe, called the 'Harp' for short, will simulate Bragg scattering and that it can also be used to study nonlinear wave processes.

    Description: A method for measuring the surface electrical resistance of small metallic samples at submillimeter wavelengths is presented which employs a qausi-optical hemispherical resonator fed by an optically pumped far-infrared laser. The small beam size at the sample, which serves as a plane mirror, allows measurements on samples with widths as small as 5 mm. The quality factor is high, and surface resistance losses are readily measurable.

    Description: Doppler Global Velocimetry (DGV) is a new diagnostic tool that offers potential for flow field measurements in flight by acquiring three-component velocity data in near real-time during flight maneuvers. The feasibility of implementation of a flight DGV system aboard NASA's High-Angle-of-Attack Research Vehicle (HARV) was addressed in this work by identifying the essential characteristics of a flight measurement system and by performing calibration and error tests. Results from this work were: an outline that establishes a preliminary basis for system configurations by analyzing measurement errors, installation issues, and operating requirements; measurement of the accuracy of the DGV technique using a laboratory breadboard DGV system based on a frequency-doubled Nd: YAG laser and iodine Absorption Line Filter (ALF), which showed excellent agreement between the DGV data and pilot measurements on a laminar flow jet with velocities of up to 150 m/sec; a survey of DGV system components and technologies that are relevant to the design of a flight measurement system, including a survey of cameras for the next generation DGV receivers; an assessment of the candidate lasers and absorption line filters for the flight system, resulting in a near-term recommendation of Nd: host lasers and an iodine ALF for both flight and wind tunnel applications.

    Description: Multiwire proportional counters with 1 micrometer polypropylene windows, of dimensions 75 mm x 75 mm and 100 mm x 100 mm, have been built to map soft cosmic X-rays. The counters are constructed with a large drift region which makes it possible to use the center-of-gravity technique to improve the counter's efficiency and position resolution. Using 330 torr of propane as the gas fill and an anode plane composed of 20 micrometer diameter, gold-plated tungsten wire spaced 1mm apart, a position resolution of better than 280 micrometers (FWHM) in two orthogonal directions at an X-ray energy of 0.94 keV was achieved.

    Description: An experimental version of a thinned illuminated buried-channel 512 x 320 pixel CCD with reduced amplifier input capacitance has been produced which is characterized by lower readout noise. Changes made to the amplifier are discussed, and readout noise measurements obtained by several different techniques are presented. The single energetic electron response of the CCD in the electron-bombarded mode and the single 5.9 keV X-ray pulse height distribution are reported. Results are also given on the dark current versus temperature and the spatial frequency response as a function of signal level.

    Description: The recent availability of large format CCD's with high quantum efficiency makes it possible to achieve significant advances in high dispersion astronomical spectroscopy. An echelle CCD combination excels or equals other techniques presently available, and offers the advantage of complete spectral coverage of several thousand Angstroms in a single exposure. Attention is given to experiments which were conducted with a CCD camera head and an echelle spectrograph on a 4-meter telescope. It was found possible to achieve a signal-to-noise ratio of 150/1 on a 13th magnitude star at 6000 A in a two-hour exposure at 0.16 A/pixel, limited primarily by photon statistics. For fainter objects, readout noise is the limiting factor in precision. For 20 electron rms readout noise, an S/N = 15/1 at 18th magnitude is expected, all other things being equal.
