    Description: Bolometers are still the detectors of choice for low background infrared observations at wavelengths longer than 200 microns. In the low background limit, bolometers become more sensitive as their operating temperature decreases, due to fundamental thermodynamic laws. The adiabatic demagnetization technique was evaluated by building a bolometer detection system operating at a wavelength of 1 millimeter for use at a ground based telescope. The system was fit checked at the telescope and is expected to take its first data in November, 1985.

    Description: Transient coronal EUV emission, recorded in an emission line of Fe XI at 180.4 A, has been observed prior to and during the initial stages of a solar flare. This emission provides direct evidence of the interactions between the lower corona and the chromosphere during flare initiation. The first EUV enhancement was correlated with activation and eruption of a filament, extended over a distance of about 120,000 km, and had an emission maximum at the site of filament disruption. A moving source of EUV emission also appeared along the trajectory of the erupting filament as it accelerated through the low corona. The mass of this source is estimated to be greater than that of the initial filament or surrounding corona, implying an additional mass ejection from the chromosphere. EUV emission during the impulsive phase of the flare consisted of transient sources along the photospheric magnetic neutral line, with intervening regions of lesser intensity that are interpreted as transient coronal loops below the erupting filament.

    Description: The Infrared Array Camera (IRAC), Multiband Imaging Photometer (MIP), and the Infrared Spectrometer (IRS) of the Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) are described. The configuration and capabilities of the SIRTF are discussed. The small silicon array module, the germanium array module, and bolometer module of MIP, which is designed to provide sensitivity limited only by natural background and telescope emissions over the 3-200 micron spectral range, and allow diffraction limited imaging, super resolution techniques, mapping, and surveying, are examined. The objectives and design of the IRAC, which is constructed for two-dimensional photometry and imaging over a wavelength region from 2-30 microns and to perform extragalactic, galactic and solar system astronomy, are studied. The use of the IRS to study the dynamical and physical phenomena of the universe in the 2.5-200 micron range is analyzed.

    Description: Unique observations from OSO-7 of the intense flare on 7 August 1972 are presented, showing 1.6 second oscillations in it's soft X-ray emission which are long enduring, extremely regular, and initially of large amplitude. For approximately 20 minutes just after flare maximum, the X-ray intensity of an area 20 arc second square near the flare's core was monitored with 160 millisecond time resolution in two channels, 2-8A and 8-16A. Each channel recorded over 700 cycles of the X-ray oscillations, which remained remarkably stable in phase and period throughout the entire observations, but with gradually diminishing amplitude. The observed period does not correspond to any known operational periodicity in either the instrument or the spacecraft and cannot be attributed to aliasing with any other oscillatory component. Channel ratios indicate that both the temperature and electron density of the emitting plasma are enhanced at the peak of each cycle. There is indirect evidence that the X-ray pulsations are occurring only in a relatively small portion of an elongated feature, presumed to be a loop or arcade of loops.

    Description: An extreme ultraviolet imaging spectrograph was used to obtain coronal observations with high spectral and spatial resolution. The imaging properties of the instrument enable measurements of spectral line shapes and positions in discrete spatial elements of a region, so that the dynamic characteristics of the coronal plasma, as well as the distribution of emission measure with temperature and well known density diagnostics, can be studied for specific features. The instrumentation is described and several results of a sounding rocket flight on 5 May 1989, when the corona over NOAA Region 5464 including emission over the umbra of the region's largest sunspot and the pre-impulsive phase emission of a small flare was recorded, are summarized.

    Description: First results are presented of observations of a lunar occultation of the solar limb made from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory in the 30 micrometr, 50 micrometer, 100 micrometer, and 200 micrometer continuum during the total solar eclipse of 1981 July 31. The solar limb was extended at the longer wavelengths up to 1000 km higher than predicted from smooth plane-parallel chromospheric models. Results at both second and third contact show the infrared limb extensions to be approximately 0".8, 1"5, 2".5 and 3".0 above the visible limb in the observed bands, respectively. A possible interpretation proposes chromospheric fine structure inhomogeneities of greater density than presently incorporated in models of the middle chromosphere.

    Description: The brightness profile of the quiet sun in broad continuum passbands centered at 30, 50, 100, and 200 microns was observed with a resolution of 2 arcmin. Weak radial darkening was seen at all four wavelengths near disk center. This reverses to brightening toward the limb in the 100 and 200 micron continuum. Radial darkening at 100 and 200 microns is not expected from smooth model chromospheres consistent with absolute brightness measurements. These results do not support a homogeneous model of the low chromosphere, where the temperature reversal occurs.

    Description: Spatially resolved EUV coronal emission-line profiles have been obtained in a solar active region, including a large sunspot, using an EUV imaging spectrograph. Relative Doppler velocities were measured in the lines of Mg IX, Fe XV, and Fe XVI with a sensitivity of 2-3 km/s at 350 A. The only significant Doppler shift occurred over the umbra of the large sunspot, in the emission line of Mg IX (at Te of about 1.1 x 10 exp 6 K). The maximum shift corresponded to a peak velocity toward the observer of 14 +/- 3 km/s relative to the mean of measurements in this emission line made elsewhere over the active region. The magnetic field in the low corona was aligned to within 10 deg of the line of sight at the location of maximum Doppler shift. Depending on the closure of the field, such a mass flow could either contribute to the solar wind or reappear as a downflow of material in distant regions on the solar surface. The site of the source, near a major photospheric field boundary, was consistent with origins of low-speed solar wind typically inferred from interplanetary plasma observations.
