    Description / Table of Contents: Résumé En pays Bamiléké, sur les hauts plateaux de l'ouest du Cameroun, les paysans utilisent la technique des macro-boutures pour la gestion de leur parc arboré. L'utilisation du macrobouturage suit un certain nombre de règles pour la récolte des boutures, leur conditionnement et leur plantation, qui dépendent de l'espèce bouturée. La fonction principale de la haie détermine la longueur et l'espacement des boutures, leur organisation et leur palissage avec du ‘bambou’ raphia. Cette technique contribue à la construction de haies séparant l'espace cultivé des parcs à bétail d'une part, et marquant les limites de leur concession d'autre part. Elle répond utilement à un certain nombre de besoins: marquage rapide de limites foncières; séparation élevage/agriculture; fourniture de la majeures parties des besoins de la famille en produits forestiers par une taille en tétard. Mais elle réquière une gestion fine des haies. Avec la diminution des troupeaux et l'abscence fréquente du chef de famille, les techniques de gestion du parc arboré évoluent.
    Notes: Abstract In the Bamileke country (West Cameroon), farmers use pole-cutting practice for plantation tree and hedge management. Depending on the species, this practice follows certain rules for gathering, conditioning and planting of pole-cuttings. The main function of the living fences determines the length of the cuttings, the space between them, the hedge structure and its latticing with raffia ‘bamboo’. Pole-cutting practice enables farmers to set up pigs, goats and sheep enclosures in the crop fields, as well as to demarcate the family lots. Trees stemming from pole-cutting are pollarded to supply the family group with the majority of their wood product requirements. Pole-cutting practice fulfills the needs of several farmers such as rapid delimitation of land, animal enclosures, firewood, construction wood, timber and cutting production. However, this practice needs a fine hedge management. With decreasing sheep and goat herds and the frequent absence of the farmer, techniques of hedge management are changing.

    Description: Volatile compounds in comets are the most pristine materials surviving from the time of formation of the Solar System, and thus potentially provide information about conditions that prevailed in the primitive solar nebula. Moreover, comets may have supplied a substantial fraction of the volatiles on the terrestrial planets, perhaps including organic compounds that played a role in the origin of life on Earth. Here we report the detection of hydrogen isocyanide (HNC) in comet Hyakutake. The abundance of HNC relative to hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is very similar to that observed in quiescent interstellar molecular clouds, and quite different from the equilibrium ratio expected in the outermost solar nebula, where comets are thought to form. Such a departure from equilibrium has long been considered a hallmark of gas-phase chemical processing in the interstellar medium, suggesting that interstellar gases have been incorporated into the comet's nucleus, perhaps as ices frozen onto interstellar grains. If this interpretation is correct, our results should provide constraints on the temperature of the solar nebula, and the subsequent chemical processes that occurred in the region where comets formed.

    Description: We have developed a new photochemical model of Titan's atmosphere which includes all the important compounds and reactions in spherical geometry from the surface to 1240 km. Compared to the previous model of Yung et al. (1984), the most significant recent change in the reactions used is the updated methane dissociation scheme (Mordaunt et al. 1993). Moreover, the transfer of the solar radiation in the atmosphere and the photolysis rates have been calculated by using a Monte Carlo code. Finally, the eddy diffusion coefficient profile is adjusted in order to fit the mean vertical distribution of HCN retrieved from millimeter groundbased observations of Tanguy et al. (1990); using new values for the boundary flux of atomic nitrogen (Strobel et al. 1992). We have run the model in both steady-state and diurnal modes, with 62 species involved in 249 reactions. There is little difference between diurnal and steady-state results. Overall our results are in a closer agreement with the abundances inferred from the Voyager infrared measurements at the equator than the Yung et al. results. We find that the catalytic scheme for H recombination invoked by Yung et al. only slightly improves the model results and we conclude that this scheme is not essential to fit observations.

    Description: Deuterated water (HDO) was detected in comet C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp) with the use of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The inferred D/H ratio in Hale-Bopp's water is (3.3 +/- 0.8) x 10(-4). This result is consistent with in situ measurements of comet P/Halley and the value found in C/1996 B2 (Hyakutake). This D/H ratio, higher than that in terrestrial water and more than 10 times the value for protosolar H2, implies that comets cannot be the only source for the oceans on Earth.

    Description: Deuterated hydrogen cyanide (DCN) was detected in a comet, C/1995 O1 (Hale-Bopp), with the use of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. The inferred deuterium/hydrogen (D/H) ratio in hydrogen cyanide (HCN) is (D/H)HCN = (2.3 +/- 0.4) x 10(-3). This ratio is higher than the D/H ratio found in cometary water and supports the interstellar origin of cometary ices. The observed values of D/H in water and HCN imply a kinetic temperature 〉/=30 +/- 10 K in the fragment of interstellar cloud that formed the solar system.

    Description: The atmospheric circulation of Titan is investigated with a general circulation model. The representation of the large-scale dynamics is based on a grid point model developed and used at Laboratoire de Meteorologie Dynamique for climate studies. The code also includes an accurate representation of radiative heating and cooling by molecular gases and haze as well as a parametrization of the vertical turbulent mixing of momentum and potential temperature. Long-term simulations of the atmospheric circulation are presented. Starting from a state of rest, the model spontaneously produces a strong superrotation with prograde equatorial winds (i.e., in the same sense as the assumed rotation of the solid body) increasing from the surface to reach 100 m sec-1 near the 1-mbar pressure level. Those equatorial winds are in very good agreement with some indirect observations, especially those of the 1989 occultation of Star 28-Sgr by Titan. On the other hand, the model simulates latitudinal temperature contrasts in the stratosphere that are significantly weaker than those observed by Voyager 1 which, we suggest, may be partly due to the nonrepresentation of the spatial and temporal variations of the abundances of molecular species and haze. We present diagnostics of the simulated atmospheric circulation underlying the importance of the seasonal cycle and a tentative explanation for the creation and maintenance of the atmospheric superrotation based on a careful angular momentum budget.

    Description: The formation of the giant planets is one of the most fundamental questions in solar system exploration. Understanding the process that led to the creation of Jupiter is essential to understanding the nature of the primordial solar nebula, and the formation of our solar system and others currently being discovered. Data from Galileo combined with HST and Ulysses results validated our basic understanding of Jupiter as a giant planet whose gaseous envelope consists of solar nebula gas enriched in elements heavier than He by in falling icy planetesimals. However, the current Galileo Probe data set does not itself allow firm conclusions about the original planetesimal composition or the process of giant planet formation - we crucially need the O and N abundances that Galileo could not determine. We propose a new and simple concept capable of determining these abundance in Jupiter plus substantial gravity science. Additional information is contained in the original extended abstract.

    Description: Titan is unique in the solar system, the only moon that has a dense atmosphere. The major constituents of the atmosphere, nitrogen and methane, are continuously broken apart by a combination of solar UV, impinging electrons from Saturn s magnetosphere, and a steady flux of cosmic rays. The resulting molecular fragments recombine and form a variety of new species, many of which were detected for the first time by Voyager1 . The ubiquitous, surface- hiding aerosol blanket manifests the existence of still more complex compounds. In addition to hydrocarbons and nitriles, the atmosphere is known to contain CO, CO2 and externally delivered H2O. The Gas Chromatograph Mass Spectrometer (GCMS) on the Huygens Probe will measure the chemical composition of the atmosphere of Titan from 170 Km altitude (approximately 1hPa) to the surface (approximately 1500hPa) and determine the isotope ratios of the major constituents. The GCMS will also analyze gas samples from the Aerosol Collector Pyrolyser (ACP) and may be able to obtain compositional information of several surface materials. The GCMS consists of a quadrupole mass spectrometer (QP) with a secondary electron multiplier ion detector, a three-column gas chromatograph (GC) and an elaborate gas sampling system. The gas sampling system will provide atmospheric samples to the QP for nearly continuous analysis during the Probe descent and batch samples at several altitudes for GC analysis. It also contains a chemical scrubber for noble gas analysis and an enrichment cell for trace constituent enhancement. In addition to the sampling of the atmosphere periodic gas samples, derived from the pyrolysis of aerosols, will be transferred from the ACP to the GCMS for direct QP and full GCMS analysis. The QP can analyze molecular masses from 2 to 141Dalton. The nominal detection threshold is at a mixing ratio of 10E-8. Data rate is 885 bits/sec. The mass of the instrument is 17.3 kg and the energy required for operation during the descent is 110 Watt-hours.
