Notes: During the microstructural examination of ceramic thermal barrier coatings by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), initial efforts for the preparation of cross-sectional thin foils from interface regions by conventional means were mostly failures. Delamination of the Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 ceramic coating from the nickel-base alloy substrate sometimes occurred during fine polishing at around 80 μm thickness but mostly occurred during dimpling. Because of this sensitivity, special techniques for mechanical handling were developed so that ion milling could give thin enough regions of the metal-ceramic interface. TEM showed convincingly that the highly fragile nature of the coatings is in fact due to the extensive porosity at the interface developed as a result of heat treatment.

Description: The oxidation of single crystal beta-NiAl has been studied primarily using electron microscopy. Oriented metastable Al2O3 phases form during transient oxidation at 800 C. Specific orientation relationships exist on all metal orientations studied and are a result of the small mismatch along aligned close-packed directions in the cation sublattices of the metal and oxide. Transformation of the metastable Al2O3 phases at 1100 C results in an oxide morphology described as the 'lacey' structure of alpha-Al2O3 scales. This structure results from impingement of oriented patches of alpha-Al2O3 as the transformation initiates and moves radially parallel to the surface. Scale growth occurs by diffusion along high angle grain boundaries. A drastic reduction in oxidation rate accompanies the change in oxide morphology.

Description: A commercially available bulk 4.5 mole percent yttria-Y2O3)-partially-stabilized zirconia (PSZ) was studied by light microscopy, X-ray analysis, microhardness measurement, and fracture toughness testing. The growth of the precipitates and the phase transformations were studied as a function of aging in air at 1500 C. Aging cuves were constructed for both the as-received and the solution-annealed-and-quenched materials; the curves showed hardness peaks at 1397 and 1517 kg/sq mm, respectively. A total of twelve different types of tetragonal precipitates were found. The rectangular plate-shaped tetragonal precipitates were found to have a (110) habit plane. Grinding of the Y2O3 PSZ into powder did not cause a significant amount of metastable tetragonal precipitates to transform into the monoclinic phase, thus indicating that transformation toughening is not a significant mechanism for the material. The fracture toughness of the aged and of the unaged solution-annealed-and-quenched PSZ was found to be between 2 and 3 MN/cu m/2.

Description: The transient oxidation of beta-NiAl in air at 800 C and 1100 C has been studied using electron microscopy. The oxide scale consists predominantly of metastable Al2O3 phases. Theta-Al2O3 is the major oxide phase within 10.0 hr of oxidation at 800 C and 0.1 hr at 1100 C. The scales form epitaxially on (001) sub beta and (012) sub beta specimens throughout the transient stage, whereas the degree of preferred oxide orientation decreases with oxidation time on (011) sub beta and (111) sub beta specimens. The orientation relationships reflect the small mismatch between parallel close-packed directions in the metal and in the cation sublattice of the oxides. The correlation of distinctive oxide surface morphologies with internal structural defects indicates the strong tendency of the Al2O3 scale to grow via short-circuit diffusion paths.
