Notes: Abstract The dissociation constants Kd of triethylammonium picrate have been determined from conductimetric measurements in nitrobenzene (NB) and in ortho-dichlorobenzene (ODCB) with and without pyridines being used as ligands. In the absence of any ligand, the enhancement of the dissociation in NB as compared with that in ODCB cannot be explained solely by the increase of the dielectric constant, but shows the existence of specific interactions of the former solvent with the ions. The results obtained in the presence of ligands are consistent with the formation of a 1:1 cation-pyridine hydrogen-bonded complex. The constantk 1 + for the formation of theis complex has been determined for six substituted pyridines in both solvents. Logk 1 + varies linearly with the Hammett parameter σH of the substituent. The slope ρ of the Hammett relation is −1.86 in NB and −2.90 in ODCB. The difference can be ascribed to specific interactions between NB and the pyridines which become stronger when the pyridine is more basic.

Description: A new species of Stelletta from the southwestern Atlantic, Stelletta hajdui sp.n. is described from the slope off Rio Grande do Sul State coast, Brazil (32\xc2\xb024\'S, 50\xc2\xb015\'W) (Fig.1). The material studied was dredged up at the depth of 200m by the R/V Atl\xc3\xa2ntico Sul, during \xe2\x80\x9cProjeto Talude\xe2\x80\x9d run by Funda\xc3\xa7\xc3\xa3o Universidade de Rio Grande (FURG). A key to the Brazilian Stelletta sponges is provided.

Description: A new species, Erylus soesti n. sp. is described from SE Brazil. This study is part of an ongoing revision of genus Erylus Gray, 1867 (Mothes, Lerner & Da Silva, 1999; Mothes & Lerner, 1999) and adds a further brazilian species to the genus. This new species can be distinguished by the possession of dichotriaenes, oxeas, and peculiar cushion-like aspidasters with extremely irregular outline, microspined microstrongyles and sphaeroxyasters. A key for identification of brazilian species is provided.
