Description: Given the yearly challenge of seasonal influenza and the potential catastrophic consequences of future pandemics, the need for intensive basic and clinical influenza research is unquestionable. Although the fruits of decades of research have enabled dramatic improvements in our ability to prevent and treat influenza, many fundamental questions remain, including those related to the complex factors associated with host switching and transmission of influenza viruses. Recent public concern over two H5N1 influenza manuscripts that studied the transmissibility of influenza viruses has triggered intense discussion on dual-use research and the way forward.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Fauci, Anthony S -- Collins, Francis S -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2012 Jun 22;336(6088):1522-3. doi: 10.1126/science.1224305.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD 20892, USA. afauci@niaid.nih.gov〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22723407" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: A new collaborative model of research is needed to increase resources, to prioritize the R (ii) to increase the pace, reduce the overlap, and more systematically explore the elements of and delivery systems for vaccines; (iii) to use common standards for the prompt comparative testing of vaccine candidates; (iv) to expand resources for manufacturing vaccine candidates to speed their use in human trials; and (v) to increase the capacity for international clinical trials and to focus this effort toward quickly measuring the effectiveness of vaccine protection as prototype vaccine candidates are identified.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Klausner, Richard D -- Fauci, Anthony S -- Corey, Lawrence -- Nabel, Gary J -- Gayle, Helene -- Berkley, Seth -- Haynes, Barton F -- Baltimore, David -- Collins, Chris -- Douglas, R Gordon -- Esparza, Jose -- Francis, Donald P -- Ganguly, N K -- Gerberding, Julie Louise -- Johnston, Margaret I -- Kazatchkine, Michel D -- McMichael, Andrew J -- Makgoba, Malegapuru W -- Pantaleo, Giuseppe -- Piot, Peter -- Shao, Yiming -- Tramont, Edmund -- Varmus, Harold -- Wasserheit, Judith N -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2003 Jun 27;300(5628):2036-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Seattle, WA 98102, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12829768" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: The need to broaden research directed at answering fundamental questions in HIV vaccine discovery through laboratory, nonhuman primate (NHP), and clinical research has recently been emphasized. In addition, the importance of attracting and retaining young researchers, developing better NHP models, and more closely linking NHP and clinical research is being stressed. In an era of a level budget for biomedical research at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), HIV/AIDS vaccine research efforts will need to be carefully prioritized such that resources to energize HIV vaccine discovery can be identified. This article summarizes progress and challenges in HIV vaccine research, the priorities arising from a recent summit at NIAID, and the actions needed, some already under way, to address those priorities.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Fauci, Anthony S -- Johnston, Margaret I -- Dieffenbach, Carl W -- Burton, Dennis R -- Hammer, Scott M -- Hoxie, James A -- Martin, Malcolm -- Overbaugh, Julie -- Watkins, David I -- Mahmoud, Adel -- Greene, Warner C -- Intramural NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2008 Jul 25;321(5888):530-2. doi: 10.1126/science.1161000.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health, 31 Center Drive, Bethesda, MD 20892, USA. afauci@niaid.nih.gov〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18653883" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
