Description / Table of Contents: Methacrylates and acrylates (3a-i) of 2-hydroxyalkyl carbamates (2) were synthesized and radically homo- and copolymerized. It was found that the homopolymerization follows the usual kinetic laws. The physico-chemical properties of the polymers are determined by the bulky and polar side groups which was revealed by measurements of the viscosity, of GPC, of X-rays, of DTA, and of NMR. The behaviour of the methacrylates in the radical copolymerization with a series of comonomers is similar to that of methyl methacrylate. However, the tendency to incorporation of the new monomers into the copolymers is less than that of methyl methacrylate. This fact could be caused again by the different steric effects.

Description / Table of Contents: Electrochemical investigations into the influence of nitrate and nitrite on the starting rest potentials and the short circuit current of the element iron/tin in fruit acids and juicesWith the aid of electrochemical measurements the influence is studied of nitrate and nitrite additions on the corrosion behaviour of tin and the iron/tin element in various fruit acids (citric, acetic, tartaric, malic and lactic acids) and vegetable and fruit juices; the results are compared with storage tests conducted in parallel. The electrochemical short time test is generally little suitable for showing the influence of nitrates, in particular because of the slow conversion of nitrate into nitrite which is a corrosion accelerator; the nitrite influence, on the other hand, can be shown quite easily since it produces on the one hand a potential shift toward more positive values and, on the other hand, gives rise to an increase in the short circuit current. These results can be applied to coated cans, too, where the nitrite gives rise to strong dissolution of iron with pitting attack.

Description / Table of Contents: Korrosionsverhalten von weichmagnetischen Eisen Nickel LegierungenDas Korrosionsverhalten verschiedener FeNi-Legierungen mit Nickelgehalten zwischen 35 und 82 Masse% wurde in einem Kondenswasserklimatest zwischen Raumtemperatur and 80°C untersucht.
Notes: The corrosion behaviour of different FeNi alloys containing between 35 and 82 wt% nickel has been investigated in a humidity test between room temperature and 80°C. It has been found that higher nickel contents improve the corrosion behaviour. The poor corrosion behaviour of the low nickel containing alloys can be improved by grinding and cleaning the surface. With approximately 40 wt% nickel and 8 wt% chromium a softmagnetic alloy has been found with a corrosion behaviour similar to a high nickel alloy with approximately 80 wt% nickel. This FeNiCr alloy achieves also approximately the same saturation induction of 0.75 T as the 80 wt% nickel containing Fe-Ni-Mo alloy. The sufficient low coercive force of less than 2.5 A/m after an appropriate heat treatment and the adequate corrosion behaviour make this alloy suitable as a material for stamped parts in electromagnetic relays.

Notes: Ga, Tl, Sn, Pb, As, Sb, Bi, Cd, and Hg chlorides react with magnesium anthracene · 3 THF (MgA), anthracene-activated magnesium, or “active magnesium” (Mg*) in THF, generating the respective Mg intermetallics in a nanocrystalline or amorphous state (Eqs. 1-3). Mg intermetallics accessible through the wet-chemical route can be exploited by metathetical exchange reactions for the preparation of other, highly active intermetallics and alloys; EXAFS investigation of X-ray amorphous Cu-Sn and Pd-Pb solids thus prepared (Eqs. 13 and 14) shows that they are true bimetallic alloys (solid solutions).

Notes: We investigate the effect of shear and uniaxial extensional flows on the rate of the cyclization reaction in polymers. We find that for such an intramolecular diffusion-controlled reaction the flow always reduces the reaction rate, in contrast to the previously studied case of intermolecular reactions, where linear flows enhance the reaction rate.
