    Notes: Abstract Behaviorally dominant members of blue-footed booby (Sula nebouxii) broods can effect siblicide by restricting access of subordinate siblings to parents providing food. In spite of their capacity for siblicide, dominant chicks permit subordinates to feed during short-term food shortage; in fact, the proportion of the food that the dominant takes is independent of the total amount delivered in older chicks. A model of optimal food distribution suggests that dominant chicks maximize their inclusive fitness with this pattern, rather than by satisfying their own food requirements and leaving what remains for the subordinate sibling. The indirect reproductive potential represented by a chick’s sibling appears to have influenced the evolution of siblicidal brood reduction in this species.

    Description: A real-time algorithm for measuring three-dimensional movement of the human eye, especially torsional movement, is presented. As its input, the system uses images of the eyeball taken at video rate. The amount of horizontal and vertical movement is extracted using a pupil tracking technique. The torsional movement is then measured by computing the discrete cross-correlation function between the circular samples of successive images of the iris patterns and searching for the position of the peak of the function. A local least square interpolation around the peak of the cross-correlation function is used to produce nearly unbiased estimates of torsion angle with accuracy of about 3-4 arcmin. Accuracies of better than 0.03 deg are achievable in torsional measurement with SNR higher than 36 dB. Horizontal and vertical rotations of up to + or - 13 deg can occur simultaneously with torsion without introducing any appreciable error in the counterrolling measurement process.

    Description: A pragmatic approach to the detection and analysis of discrete events in biomedical signals is taken. Examples from both clinical and basic research are provided. Introductory sections discuss not only discrete events which are easily extracted from recordings by conventional threshold detectors but also events embedded in other information carrying signals. The primary considerations are factors governing event-time resolution and the effects limits to this resolution have on the subsequent analysis of the underlying process. The analysis portion describes tests for qualifying the records as stationary point processes and procedures for providing meaningful information about the biological signals under investigation. All of these procedures are designed to be implemented on laboratory computers of modest computational capacity.
