    Notes: Abstract It is commonly known that calcium promotes NO3 - uptake in many crop species. However, calcium enhancement of NH4 + uptake by plants has received little attention. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Ca supplements on NH4 + uptake and plant growth in solution cultured rice. Supplemental Ca applied at vegetative and reproductive phases of plant ontogeny tended to stimulate NH4 + absorption, and accordingly resulted in a better straw and grain yield. However, excessively supplied Ca (400 ppm) was detrimental to plant growth. Increases in straw and grain yield observed at Ca levels up to 300 ppm were linked to the Ca-enhanced activities of glutamine synthetase (GS), glutamate synthase (GOGAT), and ribulose 1, 5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco).

    Description: The improvement of long-term reliability, the purification of mode properties, and the achievement of higher-temperature operation were examined. In reliability studies a slow increase in contact resistance during room temperature storage for lasers fabricated with In-Au or In-Pt contacts was observed. This increase is actually caused by the diffusion of In into the surface layer of laser crystals. By using a three layered structure of In-Au-Pt or In-Pt-Au, this mode of degradation was reduced. In characterizing the mode properties, it was found that the lasers emit in a highly localized, filamentary manner. For widestripe lasers the emission occurs near the corners of the junction. In order to achieve single-mode operation, stripe widths on the order of 8-10 micrometers are needed. Also, it was found that room temperature electroluminescence is possible near 4.6 micrometers.

    Description: The fundamental, quantum phase noise limited Lorentzian linewidth was directly measured from the beat-note spectra generated by heterodyning PbS(1-x)Se(x) diode lasers with a stable CO gas laser. The experimental results were matched by calculated theoretical line profiles. Linewidths as narrow as 22 kHz full width at half-maximum power were observed.
