    Description: This paper reports the presence of cosmogenic Be-10 and Al-26 in olivines from the Maui Haleakala basalts in which cosmogenic He-3 and Ne-21 were discovered. Based on production-rate calibrations in quartz crystals from late Pleistocene granite exposures in the Sierra Nevada, the Haleakala crater erosion rates derived from Be-10 and Al-26 concentrations agree within 10 percent and give a mean rate of 12 m/Myr, about 40 percent greater than the rate of 8.5 m/Myr previously derived from He-3 measurements. These results establish the feasibility of the simultaneous use of radioactive and stable cosmogenic nuclides for studies of exposure-ages and erosion-rates in basaltic and andesitic terrains.

    Description: The Canyon Diablo spheroids, which are found around Meteor Crater, Arizona, are nickel-enriched objects with diameters from less than 0.1 to several mm. Previous studies have suggested that the enrichment of nickel resulted either from shock-melting of S-rich areas followed by solidification of the liquids under strongly non-equilibrium conditions at rapid cooling rates during flight outward from the crater or from the selective oxidation of iron. Isotopic studies are an effective tool for constraining the degree of open-system evaporation experienced by a system. The purpose of this study was to see whether Ni isotopes had been fractionated by volatilization during spheroid formation. In addition, the cosmogenic nuclides Be-10 and Al-26 were measured to try to estimate the depths in the parent meteorite from which the spheroids came.

    Description: The concentrations of Be-10 and Al-26 in quartz crystals extracted from glacially polished granitic surfaces from the Sierra Nevada range are studied. These surfaces are identified with the glacial advance during the Tioga period about 11,000 yr ago. The measurements yield the most accurate estimates to date for the absolute production rates of three nuclides in SiO2 due to cosmic ray nucleons and muons for geomagnetic latitudes 43.8-44.6 N and altitudes 2.1-3.6 km.

    Description: Results of determinations of Be-10 and Al-26 produced by cosmic rays in situ in several terrestrial rock samples exposed at altitudes of 1-4 km are presented. The theoretical saturation values for these isotopes produced in quartz at the earth's surface are shown and discussed, and the expected isotope concentrations are considered in terms of a simple exosure history model which occurs without change in the altitude of the sample. The advantages of using Be-10 and Al-26 in this application, as opposed to C1-36, are discussed. The results demonstrate the feasibility of quantitatively measuring Be-10 and Al-26 produced in situ by cosmic rays in quartz and the possible applications of these isotopes as a pair for studying continental weathering/erosion processes.
