    Description: Using Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers, we reoccupied several leveling benchmarks on the Kenai Peninsula of Alaska which had been surveyed by conventional leveling immediately following the March 27, 1964, Prince William Sound earthquake (M(sub w) = 9.3). By combining the two sets of measurements with a new, high-resolution model of the geoid in the region, we were able to determine the cumulative 1993-1964 postseismic vertical displacement. We find uplift at all of our benchmarks, relative to Seward, Alaska, a point that is stable according to tide gauge data. The maximum uplift of about 1 m occurs near the middle of the peninsula. The region of maximum uplift appears to be shifted northwest relative to the point of maximum coseismic subsidence. If we use tide gauge data at Nikishka and Seward to constrain the vertical motion, then the observed uplift has a trenchward tilt (down to the southeast) as well as an arching component. To explain the observations, we use creep-at-depth models. Most acceptable models require a fault slip of about 2.75 m, although this result is not unique. If the slip has been continuous since the 1964 earthquake, then the average slip rate is nearly 100 mm/yr, twice the plate convergence rate. Comparing the net uplift achieved in 29 years with that observed over 11 years in an adjacent region southeast of Anchorage, Alaska, we conclude that the rate of uplift is decreasing. A further decrease in the uplift rate is expected as the 29-year averaged displacement rate is about twice the plate convergence rate and therefore cannot be sustained over the entire earthquake cycle.

    Description: Measurements of the ratio OH/HO2, NO, O3, ClO, and BrO were obtained at altitudes from 15-20 km and latitudes from 15-60 deg N. A method is presented for interpreting the rates of chemical transformations that (1) are responsible for over half the ozone removal rate in the lower stratosphere via reactions of HO2; and (2) control the abundance of HO2 through coupling to nitrogen and halogen radicals. The results show our understanding of the chemical reactions controlling the partitioning of OH and HO2 is complete and accurate and that the potential effects of 'missing chemistry' are strickly constrained in the region of the atmosphere encompassed by the observations. The analysis demonstrates that the sensitivity of the ratio OH/HO2 to changes in NO is described to within 12% by current models. This reduces by more than a factor of 2 the effect of uncertainty in the coupling of hydrogen and nitrogen radicals on the analysis of the potential effects of perturbations to odd notrogen in the lower statosphere.

    Description: Finite element techniques have been used to investigate the far-field deformation and stress changes due to asthenospheric viscoelastic relaxation following a dip-slip earthquake. The diffusion of extensional stress toward the subduction zone following a thrust earthquake on land is qualitatively consistent with the modified Elsasser model as proposed by Rydelek and Sacks (1988, 1990) to explain the coupled occurrence of land and sea earthquakes near Japan. However, the magnitude of the diffusing tensional signal is significantly smaller. The nominal model consists of a partially faulted elastic lithosphere overlying a viscoelastic substrate. Other models consider thin channel flow, rupturing of the entire elastic lithosphere, and changes in the depth of faulting. While some of these changes have significant impact on the magnitude and spatial features of the stress and deformation field, the far-field stress remains small. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the assumptions of the modified Elsasser model accentuate uniaxial deformation. When these assumptions are replicated in the finite element calculations, reasonable agreement between the models is achieved.

    Description: Recently developed equations of state are used to construct fully relativistic models of rotating neutron stars. All of these stable neutron star models are bound. Consideration of binding energies suggests that very-low-mass neutron stars will not be formed in supernova explosions. Some criteria for equations of state are derived from a comparison with observations. Limits for the physical parameters of the Crab pulsar are obtained. In addition, we find that cosmic-ray protons cannot be produced by pulsars.
