Notizen: Summary Nerve growth factor (NGF) was localized in the submandibular gland of adult male mice by a direct immunocytochemical method using highly purified antibodies against NGF coupled to horseradish peroxidase. In light microscopic sections the reaction product was entirely confined to the cells of the secretory tubules. The acinar part of the gland was free of reaction product. This finding was confirmed by electron microscopy. Within the cells NGF was localized exclusively in the apical secretory granules. No reaction was observed in the rough endoplasmic reticulum, the Golgi region or in the granules of the basal part of the cells. This observation favours the assumption that NGF is derived from a precursor molecule and that the precursor is transformed into immunologically active NGF within the secretory granules during their transport from the basal to the apical part of the tubular cells. Stimulation of the submandibular gland with carbachol (2 mg/kg) led to a massive release of the content of the secretory granules, including NGF, into the salivary duct.

Beschreibung: A new approach to in situ observations of trace reactive species in the stratosphere is described. A balloon-borne system, floating 40 kilometers above the earth's surface, successfully lowered and then retracted a cluster of instruments a distance of 12 kilometers on a filament of Kevlar. This instrument cluster is capable of detecting gas-phase free radicals at the part-per-trillion level. The suspended instrument array has excellent stability and has been used to measured atomic oxygen concentrations in the stratosphere.

Beschreibung: Stratospheric chlorine monoxide concentrations were measured in situ using a new and improved observational method in which the detection package is lowered on a tether from a balloon-borne platform floating near 40 km altitude and then reeled back up. Two reel down and reel up sequences covering 38 to 31 km produced (ClO) profiles which agree with each other to + or - 12 percent. The measured (ClO) profile falls within the envelope of nine previous fast parachute drop results, but exhibits a different shape, peaking near 32 km as opposed to approximately 39 km for the average of the previous profiles. These results are lower than but consistent with the profiles derived from remote sensing methods, and indicate the need for simultaneous measurements of relevant species.
