    Description: Some biological aspects of yellowfin and skipjack tuna according to catch data of traditional gillnet fisheries were studied in the north of Oman Sea during 1997-99. Based on Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) results, the spawning period or yellowfin begins in spring and reaches to the peak level in May-June. For skipjack tuna, in addition to the above mentioned spawning period, the other observed period was found in autumn-winter with a peak in January-February. The first length or maturity (LM50%) of yellowfin and skipjack tuna females were estimated 76 and 61 cm, respectively. Observation of stomach contents showed that squid was the major components of diet for yellowfin and fish for skipjack tuna. A comparison between mean length of different years and landing sites using two-way analysis of variance indicated a significant differences, The length-weight equations showed an algometric growth in tuna and isometric growth in skipjack.

    Description: Effect of feeding on linseed oil (LO)-enriched Artemia was investigated on growth, survival and stress resistance of tiger barb (Puntius tetrazona) larvae. Larvae were fed by LO-enriched (2.5, 5 and 7.5%) as well as non-enriched Artemia nauplii for 14 d, followed by 14 d feeding on non-enriched Artemia. Fish fed on enriched nauplii showed significant increase in growth performance at both 14th and 28th d. Also, fish fed on enriched Artemia, especially those fed on 7.5% LO, showed greater resistance in response to osmotic and hypoxia stress at 28th d. The results suggest that LO enriched Artemia nauplii are capable to promote growth and stress response in tiger barb larvae.

    Description: In order to come up with the responsible fishing pattern, there was a need to identify some of the biological characteristics and population dynamic parameters of yellowfin tuna, skipjack and longtail tuna in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. Occurrence of empty stomach was high in all the specimens obtained from the gill net fisheries. Purple back flying squid was the most dominant prey species observed in the yellowfin tuna study (61% in males and 57% in females). The length of maturity (Lm50%) for yellowfin tuna was estimated 76 cm, 62.5 cm skipjack and 62.5 cm longtail tuna. Length range of skipjack was from 31-100 cm and bony fishes were the most dominant prey species observed in the skipjack. The monthly gonad somatic index was driven higher values after June which could be indicated as spawning period. The catch per unit of effort of three purse seiners (Azadegan 1, 2, 3) was compared in 1998- 2000. The species composition was 47% yellowfin tuna, 51% long tail tuna and 2% skipjack.

    Description: Efficiency of various meshes of gillnets and trolling gear was investigated for catching kingfish (Scomberomorus commerson) in coastal waters of Sistan and Baluchestan province in 2007. In gillnets with mesh sizes between 57 to 110 mm and netting of monofilamnet and multifilament, the size distribution of kingfish ranged between 40 to 78 cm of fork length, which all specimen caught were immature. In mesh size of 146 mm and 171 mm, the length range of the species was larger, in which the frequency of immature fish for the respective mesh sizes was 19 and 11. In general, most fish was captured by wedging in the all mesh sizes. The size range of kingfish captured by the trolling was between 52 and 147 cm, of which more than 50 percent of caught fish were immature. The proportion of kingfish catches in the gillnets of 57-110 mm mesh sizes is about 13% of the total catch composition, for which the mesh sizes are considered as the dominant gillnets for capturing the species in this area. The conribution of kingfish catches in 133, 146, and 171 mm mesh sizes was 1.1, 52.3 and 18.9% respectively, with a 146-mm mesh size is considered as a dominant gillnet for this species. The implementation of the ban on the use of 57 to 110 mm mesh sizes for exploitation of kingfish is mandatory, which the mesh size of 146 mm and above seems to be appropriate for responsible fishery of the species. However, recommendation of standard mesh size needs to be re-examined in field trials.

    Description: A structure and growth pattern of Squalius cephalus (Linnaeus, 1758) in Tuji tributary of Talar River, Mazandaran Province, was studied during the period from August 2008 till August 2009. In total, 298 fish were caught by electrofishing and fixed in 10% formalin. The weight and length of fish were measured and the age was determinated by scallometric method. The age data showed that fishes were between 0+ to 4+ age groups. Pauli`s applied growth pattern showed a positive alometric for male and female and total fish and a negative isometric for unmature fishes. The average instantaneous growth rate of European Chub showed that the age groups 2+ and 3+ with 1.1 had the fastest growth compare to 3+ and 4+ age groups with 0.89. Condition factor of specimens showed that the highest one with 1.58 (r2 = 0.983) belong to females and the lowest with 1.17 (r2 = 0.901) belong to unmature fishes. The total sex ratio (123 males to 115 females) showed no significant differences between them.

    Description: The movement parameters of yellow fin tuna schools were analyzed by means of scanning sonar in tuna purse seine capture situations in the Oman Sea in June 2010. There was significant difference in swimming speed and radial swimming direction between the escaped and captured schools. In escaped cases, the fish schools swam faster with mostly horizontal avoidance behavior to the sound stimuli from the surrounding vessel and escaped capture under the sinking net at last. The swimming speed of the schools in two occasions was correlated to the vessel’s speed. Some alternatives of new constructions of the nets with regard to the sinking speed are discussed that may reduce the potential problem of escape capture during purse seining process.

    Description: The coastal area of the Caspian Sea and Gorgan Bay are important ecosystems receiving discharge from their tributaries. In this study, concentration of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn) and chromium (Cr) was seasonally determined at 8 sampling points during 2009-2010. Water samples were collected from the sampling stations and transferred to laboratory in polyethylene containers, whereas, sediment and benthic fauna samples were collected using a Van Veen grab. The levels of heavy metals were determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy method. Results showed that range of Pb, Cd, Cr and Zn in the water samples were 80-123, 61-97, 63-87 and 82-120 ppb, respectively and their ranges in the sediment samples were 479-1072, 98-293, 102-622 and 937-1577 ppb, respectively. The range of Pb, Cd, Cr and Zn in the benthos samples were 95-132, 59-110, 26-58 and 103-155 ppb, respectively. Zn and Pb were the most concentrate metals in all samples. Likewise, sediment had the highest heavy metal content amongst the samples. This study demonstrated that the level of metals in the environment is increasing, bringing a serious warning to industries and threat of man-made contamination, which can be restricted and a necessity to control ecosystem and food-chain pollution.

    Description: This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of live food (Artemia urmiana) and commercial diet in rearing of Oncorhynchus mykiss larvae. Experiment started when larvae were 0.12g in weight. Triplicate groups of fish were offered one of four treatments: (1) a commercial starter food; (2) live Artemia urmiana nauplii (for 3 days); (3) live Artemia urmiana nauplii (for 7 days); and (4) combination of live Artemia nauplii (5% of food) and the commercial starter food. They were fed four times daily starting at the onset of exogenous feeding, for 1 week. After 1 week, the fish of all groups were shifted to the commercial diet for an additional 3-weeks period to determine the impact of any differences in weight of fish. The result of the present study showed that those larvae fed with combination of Artemia nauplli and a commercial starter food grew significantly faster than other groups for 4 weeks. Larvae fed with other composition were similar in length and weight (P〉0.05). Survival rates of the trout larvae ranged 86-96% after 1 week and 67-84% after 4 weeks. Larvae survival after 1 and 4 weeks were significantly higher (P〈0.05) in trout larvae fed only on Artemia nauplii (treatments 2 and 3) than other treatments. The body chemical composition analysis of trout larvae showed only small differences, with the exception of the crude protein and lipid at 4 weeks. The data were analyzed to determine significant differences among treatments by one-way ANOVA. (Statistica v.9, StatSoft Inc.).

    Description: Using reference books, monitoring buyers behavior and interviewing the experts, the effective parameters on home consumption behavior of farmed fish were identified and compiled as a questionnaire. After the reliability and viability evaluation the questionnaire was filled randomly in the spring of 2008 for 295 households of different localities in Tehran. The allocation of questionnaires was conducted based on the proportion of population in each locality. The degree of importance of effective parameters and their priority were calculated by Friedman test. The results showed that, quality, taste, smell and protein content of grocery basket are the most important purchasing factors among Tehrani households. However, those who use only farmed fish or those who do not use fish at all, after quality, smell has the highest importance, and in the fourth priority, instead of protein content of grocery basket, fish bone has higher effect. We suggest that to improve consumption of farmed fish, apart from quality, the strategies of deodorizing, taste improvement and decreasing fish bones, shall be taken into consideration during harvest, transport and fish processing.
