    Description: Starting from the first principles, and with one experimentally obtained parameter, an expression for stagnation heat transfer is derived, applicable to round, impinging jets. The results obtained with a row of air jets impinging on an electrically-heated surface in a small-scale setup characteristic of a typical turbine blade have been found compatible with the average heat transfer from a geometrically similar, steam-heated surface scaled up ten times, and comparable with the results of other investigators. These findings were linked to the flow fields likely to exist in the gas turbine blades, internally cooled by a row of round jets or a single jet of equivalent width. The magnitude of heat-transfer coefficients obtained here with impinging jets approaches that normally associated with forced convection of water and evaporative cooling.

    Description: An experimental investigation of heat transfer from round jets, impinging normally on a flat plate with exchangeable, heat transfer enhancing protuberances, has been carried out, and the pertinent literature surveyed, for Reynolds numbers ranging from 14,000 to 67,000, and nozzle diameters from 3.18 to 9.52 mm. The experimental data at the stagnation point indicated laminar flow, and a significant enhancement of heat transfer there, due to the introduction of the spike protuberance; the ring protuberance reduced the local heat flux somewhat. Data have also been correlated by means of dimensional analysis and compared with the conical flow theory.

    Description: The present study is concerned with an experimental investigation of the flow characteristics and heat transfer from turbulent air jets impinging normally on a concave hemispherical plate (CHP). It is found that the incompressible, turbulent jets impinging on a CHP are in many respects similar to the jets impinging on a flat plate. The observed differences are due to effects of curvature and to a slightly higher turbulence level inside of the CHP. Attention is given to the experimental apparatus, aspects of inner boundary layer development, the maximum velocity decay in a wall jet, the derivation of a maximum velocity decay formula, the influence of curvature on stagnation point heat transfer, and heat transfer calculations for a concave hemispherical plate.

    Description: Heat transfer from impinging jets has been analyzed. Based on similarities of the boundary conditions of the related flow fields, analogies between heat transfer from impinging jets at the stagnation point and in the wall jet region have been shown for several flow geometries. Calculation of heat transfer in the stagnation region and in the wall jet region, based on available theory and the parameters, obtained from direct measurements, have been carried out, for the single, round, impinging jets. It has been shown that heat transfer from a row of round jets impinging on flat and concave surfaces can be comprehensively described through analysis of impinging jets of simpler geometries. Finally, experimental results for the local and average heat transfer effects are presented and discussed. Comparisons are made with theory and results of other investigators, with fairly satisfactory agreement.
