    Notes: Abstract Measured and calculated neutron and gamma-ray energy spectra resulting from the transport of ∼14 MeV neutrons through a 0.30-m-thick lithium hydride slab and through a 0.05-m-thick lead slab followed by 0.30 m of lithium hydride are compared. Also reported are comparisons of the measured and calculated neutron energy spectra behind an 0.80-m-thick assembly comprised of stainless steel type 304 and borated polyethylene. The spatial dependence of the gamma-ray energy deposition rate measured using thermoluminescent detectors is compared with calculated data. The calculated data obtained using two-dimensional radiation transport methods and ENDF/B-IV cross-section data are in good agreement for all of the experimental configurations. Calculated integral neutron energy spectra agree with the measured data within ∼5 to ∼20% depending on neutron energy for the LiH and Pb plus LiH assemblies. The gamma-ray spectra agree within 20% for these slabs. The measured and calculated neutron energy spectra behind the SS-304-borated polyethylene assembly agree within ∼5% except at neutron energies below ∼5 MeV where background radiation influences the measured spectra. The gamma-ray energy deposition rates as a function of depth agree within a factor of two at all detector locations.

    Notes: Abstract Integral experiments that measure the transport of ∼ 14 MeV neutrons through a 0.30-m-diameter duct having a length-to-diameter ratio of 2.83 that is partially plugged with a 0.15 m diameter, 0.51 m long shield comprised of alternating layers of stainless steel type 304 and borated polyethylene have been carried out at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Measured and calculated neutron and gamma ray energy spectra are compared at several locations relative to the mouth of the duct. The measured spectra were obtained using an NE-213 liquid scintillator detector with pulse shape discrimination methods used to simultaneously resolve neutron and gamma ray events. The calculated spectra were obtained using a computer code network that incorporates two radiation transport methods: discrete ordinates (with P3 multigroup cross sections) and Monte Carlo (with continuous point cross sections). The two radiation transport methods are required to account for neutrons that singly scatter from the duct to the detectors. The calculated and measured neutron energy spectra above 850 keV agree within 5–50% depending on detector location and neutron energy. The calculated and measured gamma ray energy spectra above 750 keV are also in favorable agreement, ∼ 5–50%, depending on detector location and gamma ray energy.

    Description: In the study of three-dimensional, separated flows, a topological approach to separation and a phenomenological approach have been considered. The topological approach is based on ideas of Poincare (1928), while the phenomenological approach distinguishes between 'open' and 'closed' separation as posed by Wang (1974). In the present paper, the topological description provided by Legendre (1956, 1965, 1982) is considered, taking into account its utilization by Tobak and Peake (1979, 1982). An attempt is made to provide a more complete framework for the description of separated as well as attached flows. Nomenclature is introduced to describe the topology of the skin-friction-line portraits on a three-dimensional body. The topological ideas are illustrated by the use of hypothetical oil-flow experiments supplemented with actual flow-visualization data when possible.

    Description: Turbulence was analyzed in a historical context featuring the interactions between observations, theoretical ideas, and modeling within three successive movements. These are identified as predominantly statistical, structural and deterministic. The statistical movement is criticized for its failure to deal with the structural elements observed in turbulent flows. The structural movement is criticized for its failure to embody observed structural elements within a formal theory. The deterministic movement is described as having the potential of overcoming these deficiencies by allowing structural elements to exhibit chaotic behavior that is nevertheless embodied within a theory. Four major ideas of this movement are described: bifurcation theory, strange attractors, fractals, and the renormalization group. A framework for the future study of turbulent flows is proposed, based on the premises of the deterministic movement.

    Description: A detailed theoretical study is made of radiatively driven acoustic waves inside a closed cylindrical tube. The formulation accounts for all the essential phenomena for a gas in vibrational equilibrium - namely, gas motion, longitudinal and radial viscous dissipation, longitudinal and radial heat conduction, and radiative transfer with spectral detail included. An approximate expression is derived for the pressure response. This solution is applicable to arbitrary spectral distribution of the radiative absorption coefficient, under conditions attainable in the laboratory. The solution includes both tuned and untuned acoustic conditions as well as the spectrophone limit - that is, the condition where the length of the tube is much smaller than the length of the acoustic wave. The influence of spectral detail on the pressure response is illustrated.

    Description: Measurements are presented of the acoustic pressure resulting from the periodic absorption and emission of radiative energy by an infrared-active gas contained in a closed, cylindrical tube. The acoustic waves are generated by means of an external, sinusoidally time-modulated blackbody source. The pressure measurements are for both resonant and nonresonant conditions at acoustic frequencies from about 60 to 600 Hz. Comparison of the measurements with predictions shows that the response is due primarily to the modified-classical acoustic wave, but that a small contribution from the so-called radiation-induced wave can be measured in certain of the tests. Strong effects of vibrational nonequilibrium, similar to those observed previously in spectrophone studies, were found in some of the tests.

    Description: A water-tunnel study was conducted of four bodies. A solution of sodium fluorescein coating the body provided visualization of vortices and feeding sheets and isolated dots of methyl blue dye provided visualization of stream lines. These data, along with published oil-flow photos, were analyzed to develop the topological representation of the flows in cross-flow planes. Presented are the development of the flow along the body at fixed angles of attack and at a fixed body station with changes in angle of attack. Effects of roll angle, body corner radius, and nose bluntness are illustrated.
