    Description: Plasma interactions and their effects on materials depend on a number of factors, including the pre-existing environment, the properties of surface materials and the characteristics of the system. An additional dimension is the question of mission: some payloads may be much more sensitive to plasma interactions than others. As an example, a payload whose objective is to measure the ambient environment will be more sensitive to any effects than will a power system. Material specific effects include charging and its associated effects, which can result in short- and long-term damage. Selection of materials for a particular application requires consideration of all factors and assessment of effects due to all causes. Proper selection and suitability determination requires analysis to identify the actual environment combined with testing under exposure to single and combined environment factors.

    Description: The Plasma Interaction Experiment 2 (PIX 2) Langmuir probe readings of the same polar magnetospheric regions taken on consecutive orbits showed occasional apparent densities as much as 10 times lower than the average, although each pass clearly showed density structures related to the day/night boundary. At other points in the orbit, Langmuir probe currents varied by as much as a factor of 20 on a time scale of minutes. The hypothesis is advanced that these apparent inconsistencies in Langmuir probe current are the results of the probe's orientation relative to the body of the spacecraft and the velocity vector. Theoretical studies predict a possible depletion in collected electron current by a factor of 100 in the wake. Experimental results from other spacecraft indicate that a wake electron depletion by a factor of 10 or so is realistic. This amount of depletion is consistent with the PIX 2 data if the spacecraft was rotating. Both the Sun sensor and temperature sensor data on PIX 2 show a complex variation consistent with rotation of the Langmuir probe into and out of the spacecraft wake on a time scale of minutes. Furthermore, Langmuir probe data taken when the probe was not in the spacecraft wake are consistent from orbit to orbit. This supports the interpretation that ram/wake effects may be the source of apparent discrepancies at other orientations.

    Description: The plasma motor generator (PMG) experiment, launched June 26, 1993, was a tethered system of two identical plasma contactors connected via a 500-m conducting tether. The experiment was designed to demonstrate the ability of plasma contactors to provide a low-impedance connection between a spacecraft and the ionosphere for both the electron emission and collection. The flight data indicate that plasma contactors enhance electron collection and emission by both neutralizing the electron space charge and scattering electrons across the geomagnetic field lines. Up to a 0.3 A steady current flowed along the tether in a curcuit completed through the ionosphere. An analytical model for plasma contactor interaction with a background plasma which incorporates electron scattering by plasma waves is compared with the flight data. Good agreement between the model and the data is achieved for an effective scattering frequency equal to one twentieth of the local plasma contactor plasma frequency.

    Description: The streamtube curvature program (STC) has been developed to predict the inviscid flow field and the pressure distribution about nacelles at transonic speeds. The effects of boundary layer are to displace the inviscid flow and effectively change the body shape. Thus, the body shape must be corrected by the displacement thickness in order to calculate the correct pressure distribution. This report describes the coupling of the Stratford and Beavers boundary layer solution with the inviscid STC analysis so that all nacelle pressure forces, friction drag, and incipient separation may be predicted. The usage of the coupled STC-SAB computer program is outlined and the program input and output are defined. Included in this manual are descriptions of the principal boundary layer tables and other revisions to the STC program. The use of the viscous option is controlled by the engineer during program input definition.

    Description: A special version of the Streamtube Curvature Analysis (STC) was been constructed to include a detached bow shock upstream of a plane or axisymmetric inlet. The bow wave is modeled using the method of Moeckel in conjunction with an approximate definition of the shock stand-off distance. A description of the Moeckel method and its implementation in the STC program are given.

The user oriented documentation includes a description of the mathematical governing equations, their use in the solution, and the method of solution. The general logical flow of the program is outlined and detailed instructions for program usage and operation are explained. General procedures for program use and the program capabilities and limitations are described. From the standpoint of the grammar, the overlay structure of the program is described. The various storage tables are defined and their uses explained. The input and output are discussed in detail. The program listing includes numerous comments so that the logical flow within the program is easily followed. A test case showing input data and output format is included as well as an error printout description.
